JackHammers Drop 7-6 Heartbreaker in Rockford

LOVES PARK, IL - The Joliet JackHammers (37-38) scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 lead, but the Rockford RiverHawks (38-37) responded with two in the bottom half en route to a 7-6 walk off victory Thursday night at Road Ranger Stadium. Rockford swept the four game series and moved into fourth place, one game ahead of Joliet.

The JackHammers again touched up Scott Roehl (5-1) for two runs after the Rockford closer blew the save two nights ago. Josh Flores coaxed a one out walk and stole second on a 3-2 swing and a miss by Jonathan Wyatt. Flores moved up to third on the play after the throw by Franco Valdez went into center. Brad Correll came up and Flores scored the tying run on a wild pitch to tie the game at five. Correll then launched a solo home run deep to left for the 6-5 lead.

Rockford would rally in the bottom of the ninth against Griffin Bailey (2-4). Bud Long walked with one out and Victor Buttler singled to put the tying and go ahead runs on base. Jason James doubled down the left field line with Long and Buttler both scoring for the 7-6 win.

Joliet took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the fourth off starter Raymar Diaz, sending ten hitters to the plate. Jon Nelson knocked in the first run on a double with Rafael Mendez and Flores each driving home a run.

The RiverHawks erased the four run deficit with five tallies over the middle innings. Rockford got three straight singles in the fourth to plate the first run off Bear Bay. Evan McArthur and Jake Eigsti each drove in a run on back-to-back sacrifice flies to cut the lead to 4-3.

Buttler, James and Rich Austin again went back-to-back-to-back with singles in the fifth to tie the game at four. Austin again collected the RBI and all three hits came with two outs.

Bay went the first six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks to earn the no decision.

Correll led the offense with three hits, including the go ahead homer in the ninth. Nelson and Flores each collected two hits in the setback.

The JackHammers end the season 5-9 against the RiverHawks, losing all six matchups in Rockford. Joliet will continue their 11 game road trip tomorrow night in Schaumburg. Todd Privett (7-4) and Brett Harker (6-7) is the starting pitching matchup. First pitch is slated for 6:45 p.m. with a 6:35 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
