Goldeyes Swept away by RailCats

August 12, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Much to the displeasure of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, the Gary SouthShore RailCats finished off Thursday afternoon what they started earlier in the week.

The Goldeyes were thumped 10-2 by the RailCats today and were swept by Gary in the four-game series.

As in the previous games, Winnipeg fell behind early and never recovered.

Gary's Jay Pecci hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Mike Reese did the same in the third inning to give the RailCats a 4-0 lead.

After Gary added another run in the top of the fifth inning, Winnipeg scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning and another in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-2.

The RailCats tacked on another run in the seventh and four more in the ninth inning for a lopsided win.

Nolan Nicholson gave up just two runs over six innings to improve to 5-3 with the win. Chris Salamida drops to 9-6 with the loss for Winnipeg. He had a solid start, aside from the two home runs he allowed.

With the Joliet JackHammers and Rockford RiverHawks - both were tied with Winnipeg for the fourth and final playoff spot - facing each other tonight, Winnipeg will be in fifth place in the Northern League tomorrow morning and on the outside of the NL playoff picture.

Winnipeg is back below .500 with a 38-39 record and have been a dismal 18-22 at Canwest Park this season.

The Goldeyes will be out to end this four-game losing streak tomorrow night when the league-leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks come to Canwest Park for the first of three games this weekend. Game time is 7 p.m. and great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
