
Jackals win in walk-off fashion

Little Falls, NJ â Kevin Grijak's walk off three-run homerun shut the door on a slugfest between the New Jersey Jackals, and the Quebec Les Capitales. The final score of the thriller, 11-10, New Jersey.
Quebec took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With runners at the corners and one out, Shane Hopper grounded out, pushing across Steve Booker.
The Jackals would score two in the bottom of the first, taking the lead. Kevin Grijak singled scoring John Anderson, and Wilton Veras grounded into a double play, and allowed Zack Smithlin to score.
New Jersey would continue their scoring barrage in the bottom of the second. RBI singles by Juan Infante and Smithlin, a sac fly by Anderson, and an RBI double by Kevin Grijak.
Juan Melo singled, scoring Shane Hopper in the top of the third, cutting the New Jersey lead to 6-2.
A Scott Goodman two out, RBI single, helped the Jackals re-gain the run in the bottom of the third.
Les Capitales tallied a huge inning in the top of the fifth, that made it a new ballgame. Ricky Morton smoked a three-run homerun to right field, his seventh of the season. Quebec would continue to hit Jackals starter Jackson Crowther. With two outs, Benoit Emond singled, scoring Lee Delfino.
The Jackals scored their eighth run in the bottom of the fifth, off an RBI double by Wady Almonte. Through five, the Jackals led 8-6.
Quebec saved their best for the top of the eighth, as they would tie the ballgame on a two RBI single by Shane Hopper. They would then take the lead on a ground ball by Buck McNabb that was booted by second baseman Juan Infante. The error allowed Shane Hopper to score. Ricky Morton pushed across a run on an error by left fielder John Anderson, putting Quebec on top 10-8.
In the bottom of the ninth, New Jersey did it again. With two runners on and one out, Kevin Grijak crushed a three-run, walk off homerun, to win the game for the Jackals.
Despite a rough outing, Jackson Crowther got a no decision in five innings of work. He gave up six earned runs on 13 hits, while walking two, and striking out three. Fabricio Benitez got the win in relief.
Quebec starter Jess Turner got a no decision in four and a third innings of work. He gave up eight earned runs on twelve hits, while walking two. Alex Santos got the loss.
For the Jackals, Kevin Grijak was 3-5 with a homerun, and five RBI.
For Quebec, Benoit Emond was 3-5 with an RBI, and a walk. Shane Hopper had three RBI and two runs scored.

New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28. On Thursday August 12, 2004, Rowan also broke the league record for grand slams in a season. In an 8-5 win over Quebec, Rowan belted his third grand slam of 2004 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. OBLITERATE Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings
The New Jersey Jackals will be holding its 2nd annual NJ PETS Dog Days of Summer on Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Yogi Berra Stadium. It is an opportunity to bring your dog to the ballpark, participate in free giveaways, get portraits, and receive interesting literature on dog grooming provided by NJ PETS, Best Friend's Photography, and Mike's Feed Farm. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m., but those who arrive by 4:00 p.m. will have the opportunity to take their dog onto the field and participate in a pet tricks contest.
The Jackals will also be holding a blood drive at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. A Bloodmobile will be located at the ballpark. Playoff tickets are currently on sale. The Jackals have already clinched a spot, after winning the first half South Division Championship. Their opponent is yet to be determined. The ballclub will be playing at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday, September 8, and Thursday September 9, 2004. Both game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If necessary, a deciding game five will be played on Sunday, September 12, 2004, with a 5:05 p.m. start. Box seats are $11.00 and reserved seats are $9.00. Lawn seats are priced at $6.00, but will only be sold if both box and reserved seats are sold out. No discounts or coupons will be accepted during the playoffs.
