Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals won their second straight game as they beat the Roanoke Valley Vipers 7-5 Saturday night at the First Arena.
Meeting for the first time this season and also since Roanoke entered the UHL, Elmira was caught napping early by the Vipers. David Beauregard scored 25 seconds into the contest, converting on a bad turnover for a 1-0 Roanoke lead. The Jackals however would respond in a big way, scoring the next six goals of the game. Eddy Lowe tied the game with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 7:41, assisted by Vince Malts and goaltender Nick Boucher. Twelve seconds later Kevin Cooper made it 2-1 Jackals with another power play goal, assisted by Mike Dombkiewicz and Trevor Burgess. Elmira's leading scorer Jarrett Konkle added to his goal total by scoring two straight goals in the first period. First Konkle scored at 13:58 assisted by Malts, then he made it 4-1 Jackals at 16:55 from Burgess and Sam Paolini.
In the second period Elmira continued to score, first when captain Trevor Burgess scored his first goal of the season at 10:01 from Cooper to make it 5-1. Then the Jackals picked up their second short-handed goal of the season, and second in as many nights, when Josh Piro tapped home a rebound from Cooper and Burgess at 12:51. Trailing 6-1 Roanoke would not go quietly into the night. They would score the next 4 goals, starting with a Josh Tataryn strike at 15:09 of the second period, sending this game to the final frame at 6-2.
In the final frame, Roanoke would score three more times to draw within one goal. Mark Scott scored at 4:34, then Petr Jelinek's power play goal at 7:53 made it 6-4. Scott's second goal of the night at 18:48 made the Jackals fans at the First Arena nervous, but the Vipers could not complete the comeback. Sam Paolini would ice the game with his first goal of the season, an empty net goal at 19:09 to top off a 7-5 Elmira win.
Jackals starter Nick Boucher continued his mid-season form, stopping 33-of-38 for his first win of the season. Shawn Conschafter made 26 saves on 32 shots for losing side Roanoke in his first start of the year.
Next up the Jackals will host the Richmond Riverdogs Wednesday November 1st at 7:05 pm at the First Arena, then head to Adirondack Friday night before returning to Elmira for two games Saturday and Sunday against the Quad City Mallards.
