Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Life is good for the Rockford IceHogs offense. The club put up six more goals in the team's 6-3 win over the Quad City Mallards in front of 3,583 Saturday night at the Rockford MetroCentre in the front end of a home-and-home-series between the Western Division rivals. The IceHogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Mallards got on the board mid-way through the second period.
Rockford took the 1-0 lead on the power play when defenseman Corey Hessler netted his first goal of the year at 7:27 of the first. Then, late in the opening frame, rookie center Yannick Tifu shelved his third goal of the campaign over the shoulder of goalie Terry Friesen.
In the second period, the Hogs broke out for four more tallies to take the commanding lead. Winger and team captain Jason Ralph fired in his third of the season 1:00 into the period making the score 3-0. Rookie center Steve Yetman later scored his third goal of the year at 3:11, chasing Friesen from the game.
Mallards goalie Jason Tapp was welcomed by Preston Mizzi, who scored two goals in 11 seconds. Mizzi's first snipe came at 9:39, his seventh of the season. The centerman then extended the Hogs lead to 6-0 at 9:50, beating Tapp five-hole.
Quad City finally got on the board at 10:27 when Matt Radoslovich beat Hogs goalie Ronnie Vogel. In the third period, wingers Chad Woollard (0:43) and Patrick (15:36) tallied power play markers to cut the lead down to 6-3, but that was as close as the Mallards could get.
Vogel earned his fourth win of the season, making 36 saves. Friesen was given the loss stopping 13 of 17 shots faced. Rockford finished the night 1-for-4 and Quad City was 2-for-7.
