New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Jeremy Slayden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to push across the winning run as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Rockland Boulders, 3-2, to notch their third straight win on Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. With the victory, New Jersey took three of four games from the expansion Boulders.
Slayden, who was behind in the count no balls and two strikes against Rockland reliever Kyle Wilson, worked a 12-pitch at-bat to plate Argenis Reyes with the winning run. Reyes, who was hit in the knee by a pitch leading off the inning, advanced to third on a double off the bat of Leonard Davis and Myron Leslie followed with a walk to load the bases.
Davis finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Reyes also chipped in a pair of hits.
The Jackals manufactured a run in the top of the first inning when leadoff batter Chris White singled, stole second, and was pushed across thanks to back-to-back groundouts by Reyes and Davis to make it 1-0. Davis then led off the third inning with a home run, the 100th of his career, to extend the Jackals' lead to 2-0.
Jackals starter James Leverton, who allowed just two baserunners through the first six innings, ran into trouble in the seventh. Leverton, who had retired 10 straight batters heading into the frame, surrendered a leadoff single to Ryan Mollica, who scored when Vic Buttler tripled off the warning track in center field to cut the Jackals' lead to 2-1. Sean Smith followed with an RBI single to center to even the score at 2-2.
From there, the New Jersey bullpen continued its dominance with Steve Fox retiring all four batters he faced, Jared Locke tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Phil Bartleski picking up the final two outs in the top of the tenth. New Jersey's bullpen finished the series having allowed just two runs and eight hits in 18 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts.
The Jackals loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning against Rockland starter Bobby Blevins, but Boulders closer Adrian Martin entered and slammed the door on the Jackals rally with the assistance of a nifty double play started by Mollica. In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Giarraputo led off with a single and stole second, but once again Martin escaped unscathed to send the game into extra innings.
Leverton, who struck out seven batters and allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, did not factor in the decision as Bartleski (1-0) picked up the win. Wilson (0-2) took the loss for Rockland.
The Jackals make the nine-mile trek to Newark's Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday night to begin a three-game series against the Newark Bears. First pitch in the series-opener is slated for 5:35 p.m. The Bears will send right-hander Jacob Wild (1-1, 2.46 ERA) to the mound while New Jersey has not yet announced a starter. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
Jackal Bites: With the win, New Jersey improves to 6-4 while the Boulders fall to 5-6... Nick Giarraputo's ninth-inning single extended his hitting streak to ten games... Argenis Reyes is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak... The contest marked the only game during the homestand that New Jersey didn't post double-digit hits.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
