Jackals Use OT To Beat Mallards
January 4, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals played a kitchen sink game with the Quad City Mallards on Saturday night, in a game that seemed to contain everything: a penalty shot, power play and shorthanded goals, and own-goal, and an extra-attacker goal with :09 left in regulation to tie the game and send it to a shootout. The Jackals managed to skate off with the 5-4 win and the two points before 4,039 fans at the Coach USA Center.
Elmira kicked off the scoring just 1:57 into the game when Glenn Stewart scored his ninth goal of the year from Brad Wingfield and Ryan Esselmont, beating Mallard goalie Joe Dimaline with a rocket from the right wing. A power play goal from Aaron Phillips made it 2-0 with help from Corey Neilson and Randy Murphy at 14:15 to round out the first period scoring.
Aaron Phillips would be awarded a penalty shot at 13:24 of the second period, his second in as many games. Phillips was breaking in shorthanded when he was hauled down by a pair of Mallard players and awarded the free shot on Dimaline, but the Quad City goalie stuck out his right pad to foil Phillips on the attempt. The Mallards followed that up with their first goal of the game at 14:27 from K.C. Timmons to make it 2-1. The Jackals pushed back to a two goal lead with just 5.2 seconds left in the period as Mike Thompson slammed home a rebound on the doorstep for his eighth of the year from Neilson and Murphy.
The third period saw Quad City score three goals in a row to take a 4-3 lead. A Dylan Mills power play marker at 3:47 kicked things off for the Mallards, followed by Brian Bolf's even strength marker at 9:18. Then, with the Jackals on a power play, Rob Guinn went to make a pass across his own goal crease, and ended up dumping the puck in past a surprised Marco Emond in the Jackal net. Steve Gibson got credit for the unassisted goal, a shorthanded goal at the 17:02 mark of the third period. Elmira saw fortune smile upon them, as they ended up with a 5 on 3 advantage after that for 33 seconds, but were unable to score. Still on a 5 on 4 power play, the Jackals pulled Marco Emond for the extra attacker. Brad Wingfield took a pass in front of the net from David Lessard, and buried the puck with only nine seconds left in regulation. Neilson picked up his third assist of the night on the game-tying marker, making it 4-4 after 60 minutes of play.
Elmira would score first in the shootout when Randy Murphy rifled one past Dimaline, but Quad City evened things as Jesse Rooney scored for Quad City. Brad Wingfield scored in the fourth round, putting Gibson behind the eight ball for the Mallards. Emond would stop the attempt to grab the two points for the Jackals in dramatic fashion. The Jackal netminder finished with 37 saves on 41 shots, picking up his 12th win of the year. Dimaline stopped 31 of 35 shots in regulation, and was the main reason Quad City stuck around early in the game. Both goaltenders played superlatively.
The Jackals now improve to 18-14-4 on the season, while Quad City is now 18-14-5. Flint comes to town Sunday for a 4 pm game against the Jackals at the Coach USA Center to round out the weekend. Tickets are still available through all Ticket Master locations, online at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (607) 722-3711. Tickets will also be available through the Coach USA Center Box Office starting at 2 pm.
