Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Jackals Triumph in Home Opener

May 29, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

After a ten-game mid-west road trip to start the season, the Jackals opened Yogi Berra Stadium with a win here in 2012. They haven't lost their home opener since 2007.

The Jackals didn't make their fans wait long. Nick Giarraputo and Carlos Guzman hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to take the 4-0 lead. Celebrating his 24th birthday, it was Giarraputo's second consecutive three-run, first inning home run.

Manager Joe Calfapietra's decision to start Chris Henderson behind the plate paid off. In his fourth start of the year, Henderson was 2-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Gaetano Giunta also knocked in two runs. The rookie second baseman is quietly having a great season, scoring more than half the times he gets on base. He extended his hitting streak to eight with his 2-3 performance.

Ace Isaac Pavlik threw six scoreless innings in front of the sellout crowd. He may have gone longer, but rain halted play before the seventh with the Jackals lead at 8-0. Pavlik's five strikeouts move him to ten behind Joel Bennett's all-time Jackals record of 632.

T.J. Wink and Jimmer Kennedy finished the pitching duties after the 30-minute delay. They combined to allow five runs, but the Boulders came up short, losing 9-5.

Tomorrow, the Jackals send out Matt Chico (0-2, 19.64 ERA), while the Boulders counter with Pat Moran (0-0, 1.93).

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
