Jackals Sweep Generals, Improve Winning Streak To Five

October 31, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Elmira Jackals News Release

Week 3 Recap: The Jackals continued to roll during Week 3 as they earned their second consecutive weekend sweep of the young season, winning two games against the Flint Generals at First Arena. Friday night, Yevgeny Lazarev torched the Generals for three goals, two of them short-handed, earning the Jackals first Hat Trick of the season in an 8-5 win. Scott Wray and rookie David Morelli each had two goals in the game as Elmira exploded for their highest offensive output of the year. Saturday night, the Jackals were restrained in the goals department, but snuck out with a 3-2 shootout win courtesy of some phenomenal goaltending by Kris Tebbs. In two shootouts this season, Tebbs has stopped all 7 attempts he has faced and Eric Anderson is a perfect 2-for-2 as he has scored both shootout winners.

This week the Jackals will face arguably their toughest test of the new season as they host the undefeated Muskegon Fury for two games at the First Arena. Historically Muskegon has had Elmira's number, boasting a 12-6-0 regular season franchise record against the Jackals and an 8-2 record in the playoffs; the Fury beat Elmira in both the 2002 & 2004 Colonial Cup Finals.

Week 3 Game Results:

10/27/06 Flint 5 @ Elmira 8

Elmira, NY - Yevgeny Lazarev scored three goals and David Morelli and Scott Wray each had two goals as the Elmira Jackals beat the Flint Generals 8-5 in a wild contest Friday night at the First Arena.

Looking to win their fourth straight game, the Jackals took an early lead when Scott Wray scored a power play goal at 3:53 of the first period, assisted by Yevgeny Lazarev and Erik Anderson, giving the Jackals a 1-0 lead and sparking a goal-fest in Elmira. Dave Frawley tied the game at 8:11 for Flint, but the home side came right back. Rookie David Morelli scored a power play goal at 10:08 on a great feed from J.F. Soucy to regain the lead. Then Wray scored his second goal of the night at 15:28, finishing off a perfect 2-on-1 pass from Erik Anderson giving the Jackals a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes.

Flint drew first blood in the second period as Frawley scored his second of the game at 5:45 to cut the lead back to 3-2. Elmira then erupted for three straight goals to open up a four-goal lead. Lazarev scored at 7:17, assisted by Anderson and Scott Drevitch, then Drevitch scored from Soucy and Morelli at 9:25 for a 5-2 lead. At 12:26 Morelli scored a short-handed goal, assisted by Wray and Lupul, and the Jackals led 6-2. The goal was Morelli's second of the game and 5th career pro goal in just 4 pro games played. But Flint would not go quietly on this night. Justin Kinnunen scored at 18:03, giving the visitors some life going into the final period.

Penalties then plagued Elmira in the third as Flint scored two straight power play goals to cut the Jackals lead to one goal. Gerard Miller scored at 4:01 of the third period, assisted by Jan Jas and Shaun Fischer, followed by Jas' power play goal at 14:21 to make it a 6-5 game. But just when Elmira looked to be reeling, Lazarev would pick up his team and provide some much needed insurance. With the Generals on yet another power play, Lazarev picked off a pass in the Flint zone and neatly tucked a backhand shot passed goaltender Bryan Worosz, for an unassisted, short-handed goal at 14:51. Lazarev then iced the game beyond any doubt as he scored an empty net goal from center ice, completing his hat trick at 19:42. Scott Wray assisted on the goal, which was Lazarev's second short-handed goal of the game and Elmira's league leading 5th short-handed goal of the season.

Goaltender Shawn Degagne earned his 2nd win of the season; making 29 saves on 34 shots. Bryan Worosz made 22 saves on 29 shots in the loss for Flint. Elmira finished 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Generals were 2-for-14 with the man advantage. Elmira scored 3 short-handed goals, but were out-shot by Flint 34-to-30.

10/28/06 Flint 2 @ Elmira 3 - In Shootout (2-0)

Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals blew a 2-1 lead in the third period, but dominated the Flint Generals in the shootout to win 3-2 Saturday night at the First Arena, their fifth consecutive victory.

Elmira took the lead early in the first period when rookie defenseman Dale Lupul scored a power play goal at 6:13, his third goal of the season, assisted by Jan Skvarka and David Morelli. The Jackals held the lead until the final three minutes of the period when the Generals struck back. Martin Ondrej slapped in a power play goal at 17:21, assisted by Tyson Turgeon and Jan Jas to level the score.

The second period almost played out without any goals, but the Jackals found a way to break the tie in the closing seconds. Scott Wray scored his 4th goal of the season, and third of the weekend, at 19:22 assisted by Yevgeny Lazarev and Derek Miller for a 2-1 Elmira lead. The goal was the only even strength goal of the entire contest.

In the third period Elmira clung to the lead, not aided by the fact that the Jackals took six minor penalties in the final frame, including two stretches where Flint had a two-man advantage. The Jackals defended bravely, but the Generals found the equalizer with their second power play goal of the night at 9:24, scored by Jason Selleke, assisted by Jordan Fox and Jan Eriksson. Jackals' centerman Erik Anderson almost beat goaltender Brian Worosz with two seconds left in the game, but this one was destined for a shootout.

In the shootout, Elmira's second of the season, the Jackals took charge early and never looked back. Anderson completely faked out Worosz and slotted in a cool goal for a 1-0 lead. Scott Wray scored on a backhand shot in round two and goaltender Kris Tebbs did the rest. Tebbs denied all four Flint shooters to earn his second shootout win of the season and to remain a perfect 7-for-7 in shootout attempts this year.

Tebbs earned the win, making 35 saves on 37 shots in regulation and blocking all four shots he faced in the shootout. Brian Worosz stopped 26-of-28 to earn Flint one point on the weekend, blocking 2-of-3 in the shootout.

Jackals Player & Goaltender of the Week: (Week 3)

Scott Wray - LW 2 GP, 3 goals, 2 assists, 5 points, +5, 0 PIMs

Scott Wray's season was jump-started in Week 3 after he had a big offensive weekend against Flint. Expected to be one of the Jackals' top goal scorers, Wray had just 1 goal and 4 points through the first 5 games of the season, a slow start for him. But Friday night changed everything as Wray had a 4-point night, scoring two goals and adding two assists in an 8-5 win over the Generals. Saturday Wray scored a key go-ahead goal in the final minute of the 2nd period, then tallied a beautiful shootout goal to preserve the Jackals winning streak in the 3-2 shootout win. On the week Wray had 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists), was +5 and was not called for any penalties in a series where Elmira was plagued by minor penalties. On the season, Wray is currently 2nd on the Jackals (9th in the UHL) in scoring with 9 points (4 goals, 5 assists) and leads the team with 35 shots on goal.
