Worcester Tornadoes News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ--- It appeared as if Worcester would be leaving Yogi Berra Stadium with a 3-2 series win when they took a five run lead into the bottom of the ninth with closer Anthony Sullivan on the hill. Things unraveled quickly and the New Jersey Jackals wound up with their third come from behind victory of the week, and the series win, 8-7.
Worcester scored first after one-two hitters Heath Keel and Garrett Olson singled and doubled to start things off in the first. RBI's sent them home from Sosa and Colabello off of Jackal starter AJ Wideman (3-0) who blanked the Tornadoes over seven in his last start against the orange and black.
The Keel-Olson tandem led off the top of the fifth with a single and triple, both coming in to score again to make the score 4-0. Three more were pushed across in the top of the eighth and ninth in support of Zack Zuercher (1- 3) who received a no decision, going six and two thirds allowing two earned.
The score was 7-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Sullivan (1-1) walked leadoff hitter Marcus Sanders, and then was unable to continue after feeling discomfort then spasm on his right side. Chris Anderson (1-0) entered the contest, walked three men (one intentional, Mike Scanzano to load the bases), allowed two base hits, committed an error and had one added behind him. When the dust cleared the Jackals scored five runs and trailed by just one run with the bases loaded. He gave way to Albert Ayala (0-1). Ayala's first pitch to the number nine hitter Chris Chiarappa was a line drive to left center scoring Matt Lauderdale and Billy Kovatch and that was the ball game. Right-hander Kevin Gunter (3-0) picked up the win for NJ.
Worcester, back to .500 at 15-15 and five games behind the league leading Jackals, begin a six game home stand for Fourth of July week on Tuesday against the Brockton Rox at 7:05pm (pre-game at 6:50 on WTAG). Current and former armed service members receive $5 tickets all week at the HIP to go along with Fireworks Friday on the 3rd and Jumptown USA's performance on Independence Day.
