Jackals Silence Chiefs With 4-0 Win

The Elmira Jackals, behind 24 saves from goaltender Andy Chiodo, shutout the Johnstown Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. The victory gave the Jackals a six-point lead over the Reading Royals for the top spot in the American East Division with a game in hand entering the ECHL's second-to-last week of the regular season.
The Jackals got on the board at the 11:14 mark of the first period. Wes Cunningham followed up a blocked shot with a drive that was stopped by Johnstown goaltender John Murray. The rebound, though, sat on the doorstep for Brendan Connolly who knocked in what would prove to be the game-winning goal, giving the Jackals the 1-0 lead.
Elmira's lead became 2-0 at 1:43 of the second period, when Tyler Donati followed up a Chaz Johnson chance with a goal, his 36th of the season, from the slot.
The Jackals took a 3-0 advantage at 9:33 of the middle frame when Mat Robinson took a Thomas Beauregard feed and beat Murray five hole from the right circle for his sixth goal of the season.
Elmira capped the scoring at 13:32 of the third period on a three-on-one play involving the Donati twins and Matt Lowry. Tyler Donati brought the puck up the left wing side, dropped the puck back for Lowry in the slot who then fed Justin Donati in the right circle. Justin gave it back to Lowry in the slot who shot it past Murray to make it 4-0.
The shutout was Chiodo's first since joining the Jackals and the second for Elmira this season, with Julien Ellis recording one in Trenton on Feb. 7. It was Elmira's first regular season home shutout since February of 2009 when the Jackals beat the Chiefs 1-0. The Jackals also notched a shutout in last season's Kelly Cup Playoffs, blanking Trenton 5-0 in Game 3 of the North Division Semifinals.
The Chiefs have now gone more than eight periods without scoring a goal.
Chiodo improved to 8-3-1-0 with the 24-for-24 day, while Murray fell to 5-23-4-0, stopping 38 of 42 shots.
The Jackals' record increased to 35-22-4-3 while the Chiefs dropped to 16-39-7-4.
With two points on the day, Tyler Donati has 99 and is one away from becoming the first Jackal to reach 100 in a season.
The Jackals are in Cincinnati to take on the Cyclones at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
