Chiefs Fall To Jackals

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

ELMIRA, Ny. - The Johnstown Chiefs, for the second straight night, were defeated by a 4-0 score. On Sunday evening it was the Elmira Jackals picking up the victory on their home ice.

Battling against the East Division leaders the Chiefs came out with good jump for the first shift of the game. The line of Connor Shields, Troy Schwab, and Chanse Fitzpatrick produced two quality scoring chances, but Elmira goalie Andy Chiodo turned each one aside. Following that sequence, Mike Couch and Russ Sinkewich took tripping minors 58 seconds apart. Elmira put the pressure on during the 5-on-3, but the Chiefs, led by goalie John Murray, kept the Jackals' attack in check. Elmira finally broke through when Brendan Connolly stuffed home a rebound at 11:14. Jim McKenzie blocked the initial shot from the point, but it appeared to injure him and Elmira took advantage. Johnstown responded by putting on a lot of pressure on its two following power plays, but was unable to find the back of the net.

In the second frame the host Jackals looked to take full control of the game with a pair of goals. Former Chief R.J. Anderson started off a mad scramble in front of the Chiefs' net with a centering pass from the left wing. Chaz Johnson had his initial try turned away, but Tyler Donati was right on the spot to give the Jackals a two-goal lead. It was Donati's 36th of the season and came just 1:43 into the period. Further increasing Elmira's advantage was Mat Robinson as he took a cross ice pass from Thomas Beauregard and slid it home aat the 9:33 mark. The Chiefs had an opportunity to respond when Wes Cunningham went off for hooking at 11:10, but couldn't produce a goal and trailed by three heading into the third.

Murray continued to stand on his head during the third period, but without any offensive support his efforts went unrewarded. Elmira launched 12 shots Murray's way with the goalie from Lancaster stopping 11 of them. The only one to hit paydirt came from Matt Lowry at the 13:32 mark. After a save by Chiodo and a long rebound, Elmira had a 3-on-1 with Lowry joining the Donati twins. They carried the play within a couple feet of Murray's crease before Lowry finished it off.

Murray made 38 saves in taking the loss. The Chiefs went 0-for-3 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to home ice on Friday, March 26 against the Toledo Walleye at 7:05. The Chiefs will be wearing special U.S. Marines themed jerseys for one night only.
