New Jersey Jackals News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals today announced the signing of former Yankees' farmhand and Northern League All-Star Julio Perez to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Perez, a 24 year-old right-handed pitcher, appeared in 26 games with the Elmira Pioneers last season and did not allow an earned run. He had a 1-0 record with 15 saves, which was the second highest total in the league. Perez, who limited opposing hitters to a .165 batting average, struck out 26 batters in 25 innings pitched and earned a berth in the Northern League All-Star Game.

Following his all-star appearance, Perez was signed by the New York Yankees and was assigned to single-A Tampa. He pitched in 6 games while at Tampa and posted a 1-1 record and a 3.00 ERA before being released at the end of the season. The Jackals had acquired Perez's rights in an earlier off-season deal.

"I am very excited about adding Julio Perez to our team," said Jackals' manager Joe Calfapietra. "He is truly one of the most dominant bullpen guys in our league and we are very lucky to have him on our side."

A native of Miami, Perez was originally selected by the Montreal Expos in the 5th round of the 1997 draft. He spent five seasons in the Expos' chain, totaling 18 wins and 18 saves while appearing in 122 games. In 2000 he pitched in a career-high 41 games for single-A Cape Fear and posted a 6-2 record with 11 saves and a 3.19 ERA.

The Jackals will open up the 2003 Northeast League season on May 22nd with a home game versus the Berkshire Black Bears at Yogi Berra Stadium. For ticket, schedule and promotional information, fans can log on to www.jackals.com or call (973) 746-7434.
