New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Salina Stockade took on the New Jersey Jackals at Yogi Berra Stadium in the first game of a three-game international series. The pitching matchup between Dylan Brammer, for the Jackals, and Jordan Cummings, for the Stockade set the stage for a Tuesday night matchup.
The first inning was routine for Brammer, even though he surrendered a solo home run to Salina's shortstop William Salas, making the score 1-0 in the top of the first inning. After a Jordan Hinshaw walk, Jackals first baseman Dean Green answered by belting a first pitch fastball for a two-run home run to left field for his 10th in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second, Stockade right fielder Tino Mention doubled to left field and he was brought home by an opposite field single from second baseman Steve Longo, tying the game at 2-2. After a walk and error, the bases were loaded for center fielder Dominic Zaher, who grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Longo, giving Salina the lead at 3-2.
Going into the bottom of the third, Jackals catcher Kevin Torres led off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a John Ruettiger sacrifice bunt. Green delivered a two out, 3-0 base hit to center to plate Torres to tie the game again at 3-3. Jackals center fielder David Harris then blasted the second two-run home run of the game, giving New Jersey the lead again, 5-3.
Brammer settled down to record three scoreless frames after allowing three runs in the first two innings. Despite early struggles, he found his way to complete five innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Jackal backstop Torres led off with his second hit, advancing to second on another sacrifice bunt by Ruettinger.
Hinshaw then reached first base on an error by Salina's first baseman Daniel Williams which allowed Dean Green to drive in Torres from third, thus pushing the Jackals lead to three runs. Second baseman Seth Spivey joined in on the rally by singling to center, driving in Hinshaw, making the lead 7-3.
That hit by Spivey would spell the end for Jordan Cummings' outing, allowing nine hits, seven earned runs and five strikeouts as reliever Skyler Henderson entered the game in the bottom of the fifth. Facing the new reliever, third baseman Daniel Canela drove in the third run of the inning by doubling down the left field line, Dean Green. Collecting his first hit of the night, shortstop Carlos Triunfel doubled down the left field line, bringing around Spivey and Canela.
Rony Cabrera came on as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth and drove in two more runs, adding to the 12-3 Jackals lead. The Stockade notched two runs in the top of the ninth but the Jackals topped Salina, 12-5.
New Jersey continues the series on Wednesday night where they take on the Stockade in the second game at 7:05 pm at Yogi Berra Stadium.
