New Jersey Jackals News Release

Brockton, Mass. - The New Jersey Jackals plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a Jacob Butler single before bringing the tying run to the plate, but Brockton Rox reliever Colin Lynch induced a game-ending double play as the Rox hung on to defeat the Jackals 5-2 on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium. Despite the fact that Brockton won two of three in the series, New Jersey ends the season set having won 10 of 17 meetings with the Rox.

In his fifth start of the season against New Jersey, Freddy Flores (8-2) tossed eight shutout innings to earn the win and improve his record to 4-0 in August. The 36-year-old Flores allowed just four hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Flores retired 12 straight batters after surrendering a first-inning single to Mike DeJesus. The Jackals threatened in the fifth when they strung together three straight two-out hits, but catcher Angel Flores was thrown out at the plate by Brockton center fielder Chris Valencia to end the inning and keep New Jersey off the scoreboard. Freddy Flores finished his outing by setting down the final eight batters he faced.

After Freddy Flores departed, southpaw Brad Herztler entered for Brockton and allowed singles to three of the first four batters he faced before Butler lined a full-count pitch up the middle to plate Mike DeJesus and Carlos Sosa and make it a 5-2 contest. Hertzler then gave way to Lynch, who induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Angel Flores. Lynch was credited with his second save of the season as the Rox made it 11 wins in their last 13 outings.

Freddy Flores' counterpart, New Jersey's Jayson Miller, started strong as well. Miller allowed just two baserunners before Brockton's Melvin Falu unleashed his league-leading 19th home run of the season over the left field bullpens to give the Rox a 1-0 lead with one out in the fourth inning. Brockton tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth when rookie John Parke drove in his first career run with a single and Shawn Williams followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. In the sixth, the Rox extended their lead to 5-0 with a pair of unearned runs on a Chris Valencia two-run single following a Travis Jones error.

Miller (2-3) turned in a quality start, but took the loss after yielding five runs (three earned) while scattering 10 hits over seven frames. Miller struck out five batters without allowing a walk.

The Jackals offense was evenly distributed, as New Jersey's eight hits in the contest (all singles) came from eight different players. Catcher Chris Grossman led the charge for Brockton, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Valencia, Falu, and Derek Kinzler each collected two hits.

The Jackals (13-17 second half, 32-44 overall) return home to Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday at 7:05 p.m. to begin a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks as New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (6-5, 3.93) to the mound against right-hander Mike Vicaro (6-2, 4.03). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

*Game Notes:* New Jersey pitcher Justin Jones was ejected by home plate umpire Rob Healey with one out in the top of the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes from the dugout during Jacob Butler's at-bat... Jackals third baseman Abraham Nunez did not play due to a nagging back injury... Melvin Falu's fourth-inning home run ties him atop the Rox single-season homers list with Palmer Karr, who clubbed 19 for Brockton in 2009... With 17 games remaining in the regular season, the Jackals trail the Sussex Skyhawks by two games for the fourth and final playoff spot as the two squads square off this weekend at Yogi Berra Stadium.
