New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - In a contest where all three runs scored in the first frame, the New Jersey Jackals edged the New York Federals, 2-1, on a damp Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
After the Federals opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single by right fielder Tom Maloney, the Jackals used run-scoring singles by designated hitter Mike Jones and left fielder Jeremy Slayden to quickly take the lead in the home half of the inning. The game was delayed 55 minutes due to rain.
From there, the Jackals' pitching staff held the Federals in check. Starter Ryan Kulik, who improved to 2-0 with the win, allowed the lone first-inning run on five hits while striking out four batters over six innings. New Jersey righty Steve Fox followed with two scoreless frames before closer Jeff Gogal fired a perfect ninth to notch his fourth save in as many attempts. Federals' starter Mike Petrowski (1-2) took the tough-luck loss despite going the distance and yielding just two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
The Jackals and Federals conclude their five-game series on Thursday when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami (1-2, 7.97 ERA) to the mound against right-hander Jeff Raymond, who will make his Federals debut. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com
