Zuercher Silences Bears' Bats In 4-2 Worcester Win

NEWARK, N.J. (June 22, 2011) - Left-hander Zach Zuercher scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, striking out seven to earn his fourth win, and Chris Colabello had two hits and two RBI, leading the Worcester Tornadoes to a 4-2 win over the Newark Bears Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The loss, the second straight for Newark, dropped the Bears to 15-11 overall, while the Tornadoes improved to 10-15.
The Tornadoes broke a scoreless tie by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning off Bears starter and loser Jesse Estrada (1-3). Abraham Nunez and Colabello hit consecutive doubles, with Colabello plating the first run. Colabello scored on an RBI single from Nick Salotti, making the score 2-0.
Worcester pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning, when Alex Trezza singled and came around to score on a single from Boomer Blanchard.
At that point, Zuercher (4-2) was in complete control, shutting the Bears out on just two hits over the middle five innings. Zuercher gave way to Albert Ayala after seven scoreless frames.
Worcester added an insurance run in the eighth on Colabello's second RBI hit of the game, an RBI single off Bears reliever Kyle Morrison that scored Alex Nunez with the fourth run.
The highlight for the Bears was the return of reliever T.J. Hose, who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day. Hose pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief in his return, striking out five of the eight outs he recorded.
The Bears mounted a late rally, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Danny Santiesteban drove in two runs with a double, scoring Tim Raines, Jr. and Daryle Ward, cutting the lead in half to 4-2. But Rick Asaadorian, the fourth Worcester pitcher, shut the door to record his fourth save.
Santiesteban had three hits and two RBI for the Bears. Raines, Jr. added two hits in vain.
The game was delayed by 47 minutes prior to the first pitch due to rain.
The Bears and Tornadoes close out the four-game series with a 5:35 start Thursday afternoon. Casey Gaynor, one of the Toms River Little League World Series heroes of 1998, will make his debut for the Bears as the team's starting pitcher.
