Jackals make move up East Division standings

December 7, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

Picking up three wins in a stretch of four games in five days last week, the Elmira Jackals have closed to within three points of first place in the East Division with an overall record of 13-9-0 for 26 points.

Elmira opened last week with a 4-1 win over Kalamazoo on Wednesday. Four different Jackals found the back of the net with Allan McPherson (1g-1a) and Spiro Goulakos (2a) leading the way with two points each while C.J. Motte stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced to record the win in goal.

After suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the K-Wings on Friday in which David Gilbert scored the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation, the Jackals rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Kalamazoo on Saturday. McPherson, Zach Tolkinen and Mike Seidel tallied goals for Elmira with McPherson and Justin Bernhardt (2a) notching multi-point games. Motte earned his second win of the week turning aside 22 of the 23 shots he faced.

The Jackals ended their busy stretch with a 3-2 shootout win at Wheeling on Sunday. Jacob MacDonald and Tyler Currier tallied first-period goals to give Elmira a 2-0 lead only to see the Nailers pull even with a pair of second-period goals. The game remained tied for the balance of regulation and through overtime sending the game to a shootout where Bernhardt and Colin Jacobs scored for Elmira while Niklas Lundstrom stopped both Wheeling shots to give Elmira the win.

Elmira, which has gone 8-2-0 in its last 10 games, has had better success on the road this season, posting a 7-3-0 record away from home, including five wins in their last six away games.

Cason Hohmann has been Elmira's top offensive threat this season. He is tied for first among rookies with 10 goals and his 21 points are fourth among first-year players and tied for 11th overall in the league. MacDonald is tied for second among ECHL defensemen with seven goals while fellow blue liner Goulakos is tied for ninth among all defensemen, and second among rookies, with 14 points (3g-11a).

The Jackals are home for three games this week, hosting Norfolk on Wednesday and Saturday and Manchester on Friday.

Christie ties career wins record

With a 5-1 win over Utah on Thursday, Tulsa Oilers' head coach Jason Christie tied the ECHL record for most career coaching wins with his 491st career win.

Christie tied the record of John Marks, a 2012 inductee into the ECHL Hall of Fame, who won 491 games in 15 seasons with Charlotte, Greenville, Pensacola and Augusta.

He has led his team to the Kelly Cup Playoffs in 10 of his first 12 ECHL seasons and has won 40 or more games eight times. Christie's 882 games coached are tied with John Brophy, a 2009 inductee into the ECHL Hall of Fame, for the third most games coached in ECHL history.

Missouri's winning streak reaches 14 games

The Missouri Mavericks extended their winning streak to 14 games with a 5-2 win over Wichita on Saturday. The 14 consecutive wins is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in ECHL history.

Only three teams in league history have won more than 14 consecutive games. The South Carolina Stingrays hold the all-time record with a 23-game winning streak set last season from Feb. 7 through March 27. The Cincinnati Cyclones had a 17-game winning streak from Jan. 13-Feb. 29, 2008 while the Victoria Salmon Kings won 15 straight games from Dec. 6, 2008-Jan. 10, 2009.

Missouri, which has also won eight consecutive games at both home and on the road, leads the ECHL with a 19-2-1 record for 39 points, seven points ahead of Florida. The Mavericks look to extend their winning streak on Sunday when they visit Tulsa.
