Jackals Fall To Todnadoes 2-0 In Pitchers Duel

August 14, 2010 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - A night after the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Worcester Tornadoes 2-0 in the second game of a doubleheader, the Tornadoes returned the favor in a 2-0 victory over the Jackals on Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In his first start in over a month and a half, Worcester rookie right-hander Matt McDonald turned in his best career outing. McDonald (2-4) hurled six shutout innings and allowed five hits while striking out a career-high seven batters to earn the win.

Jackals' starter Isaac Pavlik (6-5) suffered the tough-luck loss after surrendering just one run while scattering eight hits without a walk in seven innings of work.

The Tornadoes opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the third inning when left fielder Ryan Crespi tripled to center and scored on the same play when Adam Godwin's throw from the warning track traveled past New Jersey's infield. Worcester's Boomer Blanchard followed with a single to make the run earned against.

That 1-0 score held until the top of the ninth when a two-out error by Jackals shortstop Mike DeJesus loaded the bases before Stantrel Smith scored on an Edward Rodriguez wild pitch to give the Tornadoes a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, Worcester called on closer Rick Asadoorian. All three runs Asadoorian has surrendered this season have been against the Jackals, but the Tornadoes closer retired the heart of New Jersey's lineup in order while striking out a pair of batters to notch his fifth save of the season.

Offensively, catcher Angel Flores paced the Jackals offense with a pair of singles while second baseman Travis Jones went 1-for-3 with a double and New Jersey's only walk of the night.

The Jackals (12-14 second half, 31-41 overall) and Tornadoes (13-13, 32-41) conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends converted infielder Chris Vasami (2-0, 3.18) to the mound for his fourth career start against Worcester right-hander Justin Knoff (2-2, 3.76). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
