Jackals Fall to Royals in Wild Wednesday Affair, 7-5

ELMIRA, NY - January 27, 2016 - Allan McPherson recorded a three-point night in his return to the Jackals and Cason Hohmann extended his goal streak to three games but the Jackals fell to the Reading Royals in a wild offensive contest, 7-5.
The Jackals jumped ahead early with the opening salvo coming just 1:45 into play on the Jackals first shot on goal. Guy LeBoeuf played the puck to Colin Jacobs who raced down the right wing side and fired a shot that deflected off of goaltender Nick Niedert and in for Jacobs' 10th goal of the season. Later in the opening frame the Royals responded as two Jackals collided in the slot leaving Scott Tanski alone to receive a pass from Nick Luukko and out-wait C.J. Motte for his sixth goal of the season. Derik Johnson also added an assist on Tanski's tying tally.
Elmira emerged quickly again in the second period, scoring just 23 seconds into the frame. Allan McPherson sped down the left wing into the Reading zone and laid a shot on target that bounced off of Niedert and into the slot for the waiting Cason Hohmann. Hohmann's go-ahead goal was his team-leading 14th goal of the season and extended his personal goal streak to three games. Just over two and a half minutes later the Royals received the game's first power-play opportunity as C.J. Motte was whistled for delay of game for attempting to slide the puck from behind the net to the crease and earn a stoppage after noticing Ian Young's stick snapped in their defensive zone. On the man advantage Justin Crandall found Yannick Tifu backdoor for his ninth goal of the season. The see-saw battle continued less than two minutes later, at 4:24, when Ian Young finished off a hectic scrum in front burying the loose puck for his second professional goal and extending his personal point streak to three games. Allan McPherson and Mark Bennett earned the assists on Young's go-head goal. Yet again, the Royals returned and knotted the game at 7:35 with a deflection off of Joey Sides. Ian Watters fed Nick Luukko at the point for a shot that glanced off of Sides and past Motte for his fifth goal of the season. But, the resilient pack forged ahead once more in the second period after earning their first power-play chance of the evening. Kyle Bushee worked the puck to Cason Hohmann on the goal-line and Allan McPherson popped out into an opening in the slot for the one-timer. McPherson's marker was his 10th goal of the season. Less than a minute later Reading tied the game for the fourth time of the night. Todd Perry started a two-on-one rush for Justin Crandall who played a pass across to Yannick Tifu and despite the pass being tipped Tifu knocked it out of mid-air and past Motte for his second goal of the night and 10th of the season. Then, at 17:16, the Royals took their first lead of the night with a tic-tac-toe play to Jesper Pettersson in the slot for his first goal. Yannick Tifu and Riley Armstrong added the assists.
After a wild second period, the Royals notched another goal at 4:24 extending their lead to two, which was the largest lead of the night for either side. Yannick Tifu pivoted around behind the net and found Cam Reid in the slot for the tap-in tally. Reid's 11th goal of the season proved to be the game-winner as the Jackals' never-say-die attitude led to another strike. Jacob MacDonald wheeled up the wall and stopped at the top of the circle along the boards rifling a wrist shot short-side top shelf past Niedert. Mark Bennett and Guy LeBoeuf earned the assists on MacDonald's ninth goal of the season at 14:10 of the third period. However, the comeback effort ended at 19:32 when Justin Crandall potted the empty-net goal for his 11th of the season assisted by Yannick Tifu, who recorded five points against his former squad.
C.J. Motte turned aside 45 of 51 shots faced but suffered the loss. Nick Niedert allowed five goals on 39 shots faced and earned the win.
