
Jackals fall to Quebec in extra innings

LITTLE FALLS, N.J-New Jersey lost the final game of a three games series against the Quebec Les Capitales by a score of 6-5. Jackals' pitcher Randy Rapp gave up the game-winning hit to TJ Shimizu in the top of the tenth inning. Quebec closer Christian Mendoza pitched a perfect ninth to record his eighteenth save of the season.
Quebec's Lee Delfino had an RBI single to tie the game at five in the top of the eighth ining and Shimizu's RBI single in the top of the tenth gave Quebec a 6-5 lead and eventual victory. Simon Legare went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored for Quebec. Benoit Emond went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Jackals' starting pitcher Rick Kirsten went 5 2/3 innings in his first start for New Jersey. Kirsten, pitching against his former team, got a no decision, despite leaving the game in the top of the sixth inning with a 4-3 lead.
Ricardo Cordova hit a first-inning home run, his sixth of the season, to give New Jersey a quick 1-0 lead. Cordova had two hits on the day with an RBI and a run scored. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Steve Checksfield blasted his eighth homerun of the season, a three-run shot, to give New Jersey a 4-1 lead. Checksfield ended the day with three RBIs and a run scored.
New Jersey opens a four game series against the Can-Am Grays tomorrow night. Isaac Pavlik will take the mound for New Jersey. Game time is 7:05 at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Fall, N.J.
