Jackals Edge Flint In Shootout
February 25, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Wednesday night at the First Arena did not turn out exactly as the Jackals may have hoped, but Elmira did get two points as they beat Flint 5-4 in a shootout.
Flint opened the scoring with a strange goal where the referee said goal, then no goal, then finally goal again. But Elmira struck back with three straight goals. Don Smith tied it at one on the power play, then buried another power play goal late in the first period, his second goal of the night and 23rd of the season.
J.F. Boutin extended the lead to 3-1 34 seconds into the second period, but thirty seconds later Flint got back to within one goal when Frank DeFrenza scored his first goal as a General. However, Jamie Thompson gave Elmira a 4-2 edge exactly sixty seconds later from Peter Bournazakis and Smith. That would be all of Elmira's scoring. Jim Duhart scored an unassisted goal at 8:08 of the period, his second of the game, his second goal of the game.
With merely 3:28 left in the game Flint forced an equalizer with DeFrenza's second of the night, sending this contest to a shootout. In the extra session the Jackals went down early, then took the lead after three rounds only to see it become tied after five. Trevor Segstro kept the Jackals alive in round six with a blistering wrist shot into the top shelf and Eddy Lowe sent the fans home happy in round seven. It was the Jackals third straight shootout victory.
Ryan McIntosh picked up his fourth consecutive victory (his eighth on the season) by stopping 30-of-34 shots and 4-for-7 in the shootout. His counterpart Dan McIntyre shutdown the Jackals for the final 37:56 of the game, making 37 saves on 41 shots, but going just 3-of-7 in the shootout.
The Jackals next travel all the way to the Illinois/Iowa border to take on the Quad City Mallards for two games Friday and Saturday night, then on to Rockford for a Sunday matchup with the Ice Hogs. Elmira's next home game comes Friday March 5th against the Adirondack IceHawks, 7 pm face off.
