Berkshire Black Bears News Release

Fireworks were not on the playbill for tonight's game at Wahconah Park, but they made a triumphant entrance as a huge 4th inning sparked a Black Bears' rout of New Jersey, 10-1 Tuesday night.

The Black Bears quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Ryan Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Manny Crespo from third, and Chris Briones singled over the center scoring Pete Paciorek, giving the Black Bears very early 2-0 edge. Jackals' catcher Carlos Pagan cut the lead in half with a solo blast to left, his tenth of the season. But the Black Bears answered immediately, exploding for eight runs in the fourth inning, their season high for runs in one inning.

The rally began with one out and Crespo on first with a walk. Paciorek cleared the bases with a towering drive down the right field line, to make it 4-1. Ryan Jones went back to back, knocking his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to center. Catcher Allan Shrum, who replaced the injured Briones, stepped to the plate and gave fans in Wahconah Park one of the most exciting offensive outbreaks in franchise history. Shrum smashed the ball to the exactly same place that Jones homered, giving the Black Bears back-to-back-to-back home runs, his first long ball of the season. New Jersey brought Trevor Marcotte in for the starter Chris Keelin after he walked Mark Burnett, but Marcotte could not stop the bleeding. Brady Williams singled to right, and Jose Mateo reached on a fielder's choice as Burnett trotted home to make it 7-1. Kevin Forbes singled to continue the punishment, and put Marcotte against the ropes for Shane Hopper. Hopper crushed the fourth dinger of the inning, hitting a 3-run bomb over the center fence to cap the scoring and leaving Berkshire with a 10-1 advantage.

The Black Bears sent 11 men to the plate in the inning, scoring eight runs, four homers, six hits, and two walks in the largest offensive breakout of the year.

Berkshire starter, Dan Henderson (4-9) picked up his second win in a row, allowing only one run on two hits with three strikeouts over seven innings. The Jackals starter, Keelin fell to 0-4 with the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits over three and 1/3 innings.

The Black Bears look for the sweep and a continued push towards the post season tomorrow night against New Jersey, Courtney Hall (2-11) vs Jackson Crowther (7-3) at 7:05 pm.
