New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - In what has been a rare occurrence this season, the New Jersey Jackals found themselves on the losing end of a late game comeback, falling to the Brockton Rox 6-5 on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The game started at a blistering pace with Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik and Brockton starter Fraser Robinson throwing four scoreless frames each in the early going. The Jackals struck first in the bottom of the fifth inning when designated hitter Quinn Stewart ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded scoring third baseman Mike Scanzano from third and right fielder Billy Kovatch from second.
Despite the early lead, Pavlik wasn't able to hold on for the win as Brockton plated a run in the seventh. New Jersey responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a two-run home run by Stewart, before the Rox ran Pavlik out of the game in the eighth inning. Rox third baseman Phil Cuadrado and catcher Chris Grossman ripped back-to-back doubles to score a run and make it a 4-2 game at that point with New Jersey still on top. After a fly out by shortstop Dominic Ramos, center fielder Chris Valencia laced an RBI-single that scored Grossman, cutting the Jackals lead to one. After first baseman Clyde Williams struck out, New Jersey manager Joe Calfapietra visited the mound with right-hander Seth Overbey warming in the bullpen. After a short meeting, Pavlik was left in the ballgame to try and get out of the jam. The next batter was left fielder Palmer Karr who bombed a two-run home run to centerfield, his fourteenth of the season, giving Brockton its first lead at 5-4.
The Jackals wouldn't go quietly, scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth off Brockton reliever Keith Noe who came on for Robinson after seven innings of work. After shortstop Mike DeJesus led off with a single to right, catcher Matt Lauderdale - making his first start in six games - lined a double to right center that scored DeJesus and tied the game. Noe was lifted after failing to record an out and replaced by right-hander Stevie Delabar who held the Jackals scoreless the rest of the inning.
With Overbey back on the mound in the ninth inning, Brockton plated what would prove to be the winning run. After a groundout by second baseman Melvin Falu, Cuadrado smacked his second double before being singled home by Grossman. After striking out the next batter, Overbey was replaced by left-hander Mark Suchowiecki who recorded the final out.
Brockton closer Jerry Dunn came on in the ninth and fired a perfect inning of work to earn his fourteenth save of the season. Delabar (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with his one scoreless inning of work and Overbey (2-4) suffered his fourth loss of the season for the Jackals.
Stewart broke out of an 0-for-8 slump by going 2-for-4, launching his sixth home run of the season and driving in four runs. Brockton recorded four extra-base hits, including two doubles by Grossman and the home run by Karr who went 2-for-4.
New Jersey will now hit the road for a seven-game road trip, starting with a three games series with the Worcester Tornadoes that begins tomorrow night. The Jackals will send left-hander A.J. Wideman to the mound while the Tornadoes have yet to name a starter. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the pre game show starting 10 minutes prior.
