Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals fought back on Sunday night at the Lucas County Arena in Toledo, Ohio after trailing for much of the second half of the game, scoring a late goal before falling in a shootout to the Toledo Walleye 2-1.

Elmira goaltender Tyler Sims made 36 saves in his Jackals debut, and Josh Aspenlind scored his first goal of the season in the shootout loss.

Toledo had taken the lead at 6:48 of the second period, when Bryan Ewing knocked home a puck on a scramble in front on the power play to give the Walleye the 1-0 advantage. Sims had made two saves on the Walleye rush, but Ewing was able to get the puck around Sims' skate to give Toledo the lead.

The Walleye held the lead late into the third period. Justin Donati skated from the blue line around the right-wing boards and found Josh Aspenlind cutting in front, who knocked in a one-timer into the net at 17:03 of the third period to tie the game 1-1. It was Aspenlind's first goal of the season, and Justin Donati's league-leading 36th point. Aspenlind's late goal prevented the Jackals from being shutout for the first time on the road since joining the ECHL.

Five minutes of overtime could not decide the game, so the teams went to a shootout. The Walleye earned their first shootout win of 2009-2010, receiving goals from Maxime Tanguay and Derek Nesbitt, while Walleye goaltender Jordan Pearce turned aside all four Jackals attempts.

Sims, signed to a contract before the game, received the shootout loss but kept the Jackals in the game with his 36 saves. Pearce improved to 5-6-1-0, stopping 34 of 35 shots in the Walleye victory.

The Jackals fell to 11-10-2-2 and now trail the Reading Royals by five points for the top spot in the American East Division, as the Royals defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones on Sunday. The Walleye upped their record to 12-10-1-3 with the shootout win.
