Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals fell behind 2-0 against the Wheeling Nailers on Sunday night at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.V., scored a late goal, but could not catch up to the Nailers who held onto beat the Jackals 2-1 in front of 2,118 fans.
The Nailers got on the board first at 18:21 of the first period. Casey Pierro-Zabotel's shot was kicked aside by Jackals goaltender Tyler Sims, but the rebound was sent into the net by Thomas Beauregard, who scored his league-leading 26th goal of the season to give the Nailers the 1-0 lead.
In the second period, the Nailers turned a Jackals power play the other way. Blair Yaworski knocked in a rebound from the left circle to convert short handed at 5:00 to make it 2-0 in favor of Wheeling. It was the first short-handed goal the Jackals allowed since Aaron Clarke scored short handed for the Nailers on Nov. 27 in Elmira.
Late in the game, the Jackals were in danger of being shutout for the first time on the road since joining the ECHL in 2007. However, a pile-up behind the net eventually led to the puck coming to Justin Donati at the high slot. Donati sent it to the top shelf of the net past Nailers goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak to bring the Jackals to within one at 18:59 of the third period.
Although the Jackals had a couple of chances in the final minute, they could not get the puck into the net and the Nailers prevailed 2-1 over the Jackals.
Teslak made 34 saves on 35 shots, as he gained his fourth win with the Nailers and ninth of the season. Sims remained winless with the Jackals but was valiant in defeat, stopping 23 of 25 Nailers shots.
The Jackals dropped their second straight game, falling to 18-17-2-2 on the season. With the win, Wheeling earned its third straight victory over the Jackals, upping its record to 21-17-2-1 in 2009-2010.
The Jackals are at Toledo on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18 to take on the Walleye.
