Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Jackals and Quebec split doubleheader

June 5, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals defeated the Quebec Les Capitales 3-1, a game inspired by Issac Pavlik's nine-inning masterpiece.

Pavilk (2-0) terrorized the Quebec lineup as he pitched nine innings, allowed five hits, and struck out eight batters to just one walk.

The lone run that crossed the plate occured in the bottom of the first inning, a runner he inherited from Aaron Myers', who started the postponed game against Quebec on May 31.

After a Quebec run made it 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Pavlik retired the next 27 batters without allowing a run. He went 1-2-3 in the ninth, which gave the Jackals their fifth win of the year.

Although it was not a complete game (rules state that the pitcher must start the game from the opponent's first batter), Pavlik will have no problem feeling satisfied and confident in his performance, which was a delight to the entire crowd. John Lindsey and Jason Belcher each blasted a home run against Quebec's starting pitcher, Keith Dunn, who is now winless in three starts this season. Dunn (0-3) replaced Julien Tucker, who started the postponed May 31 game against the Jackals.

Lindsey went 2-for-4 with two RBI's, while Wilton Veras and Belcher each collected the other Jackal RBI's.

GAME 2

The New Jersey Jackals allowed three runs, three hits and committed two errors in the first inning, careless enough to leave them and starting pitcher James Mondesir, who misplayed a groundball for one error, in an early dilemma.

Unfortunately, the Jackals were unable to compensate for the Mondesir and Wilton Veras' errors as Quebec won 3-1 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In the bottom of the fourth the Jackals (5-7) managed their first threat. Veras led off with a single and then John Lindsey followed with a hit-by-pitch. Veras scored when Jason Belcher's grounder started a potential double play. However, Quebec's shortstop Willie James threw a wild toss in the dirt and failed to complete the potential inning-ending play

In the fifth Jason Tuttle singled, only to be thrown out at second in a steal attempt. Zach Smithlin then struck out to end the inning.

Christian Mendoza recorded the last three outs with strikeouts to record his third save. He threw nine strikes in his quick 10-pitch inning. Gabe Ribas (1-0) pitched six innings, and allowed just a run on four hits to notch the win and Mondesir (0-2) received the loss for the Jackals.
