
Izquierdo Transferred from Vermont

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Hansel Izquierdo has been transferred to the club from Short-Season Single-A Vermont. In order to make room for Izquierdo on the roster the Trappers released right-handed pitcher Bobby Rodgers. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players, 11 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and four outfielders, plus one player (right-handed pitcher Troy Mattes) on the disabled list.
Izquierdo, 26, began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he was 0-1, 11.48 (13.1 IP - 17 ER) in four appearances (three starts). He was released on May 5, was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos on May 5 and was assigned to the Vermont roster. The Havana, Cuba native split the 2002 season between three teams. He was 4-5, 5.32 (71.0 IP - 42 ER) in 13 starts with Triple-A Calgary, 0-1, 1.29 (7.0 IP - 1 ER) in one start with Double-A Portland and was 2-0, 4.55 (29.2 IP - 15 ER) in 20 appearances (two starts) with the Florida Marlins. Izquierdo made his Major League debut in 2002 tossing 2.0 scoreless innings for the Marlins at Atlanta on April 21. He was released by the Marlins on October 3 and signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox on October 22. Izquierdo was originally selected by the Marlins in the seventh round of the 1995 draft. He entered the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 36-33 and a 4.04 ERA (571.0 IP - 256 ER) in 144 appearances (76 starts). Izquierdo played for the Cuban Junior National team in 1993 and 1994.
Rodgers, 28, was 0-0, 7.00 (9.0 IP - 7 ER) in eight appearances with the Trappers this season. Opponents batted .350 (14-for-40) off Rodgers, a native of St. Louis, Missouri. He split the 2002 season between Double-A Portland, where he was 0-0, 0.90 (10.0 IP - 1 ER) with one save in three appearances and Triple-A Calgary, where he went 5-5, 5.72 (94.1 IP - 60 ER) with one save in 25 appearances (17 starts). Rodgers was the winning pitcher in the last game in Calgary Cannons history, a 14-13 victory over the Trappers on September 2, 2002. He entered the 2002 season with a career minor league record of 39-45 with 28 saves and a 4.04 ERA (732.2 IP - 329 ER) in 208 appearances (103 starts).
The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, May 16 when the club will take on the Tacoma Rainiers. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
