Isotopes Announce Player Awards

The Albuquerque Isotopes announced their 2003 player awards before this afternoon's game with Jason Wood earning top honors as the team's Most Valuable Player. The awards were voted on by players and coaches.

Wood earned team MVP after batting .296 with 16 homers and 82 RBI though 127 games. His 16 HR are second best of the team, while the 82 RBI are tied for team high with Robert Stratton. Stratton won the PNM Power Hitter Award with a team-leading 32 home runs, which led all of Minor League Baseball for most of the season. Sean Bergman was named as the Isotopes Pitcher of the Year, after compiling an 8-11 record and 4.69 ERA. Bergman started a team-high 28 games and rebounded from a 1-9 start by winning seven straight from July 5 to August 15. The winning streak earned Bergman the Topps' Pacific Coast League Player of the Month Award for July.

Derek Wathan won the team's Mr. Hustle award after playing every position except pitcher and catcher during the season. Wathan played in 115 games, batting .295 with 21 stolen bases, third highest on the team. Wilson Valdez was named the Isotopes best defensive player for his outstanding play in the middle infield. Valdez played most of the season at shortstop with 80 starts, anchoring the left side of the infield.

In an award selected by Isotopes management, Kevin Hooper was named the Most-Community Minded Player for his efforts displayed during the season off the field in the Albuquerque community.
