Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Charlottetown Islanders fall short to the Québec Remparts 4-2 in a rematch of last season's first round matchup Sunday afternoon at the Eastlink Centre.
A packed Eastlink Centre of over 3,100 fans were treated to a back-and-forth affair.
Carter Bickle had his tenth start in 11 games in the loss.
Isles' special teams clicked in first
The Islanders drew a power play just four minutes and 35 seconds into the game as Antoine Michaud took an interference penalty on Cole Huckins.
On the man advantage, Marcus Kearsey sent a feed across to Michael Horth who buried his 24th of the season to open the scoring. Huckins also added an assist.
Then, it was Québec's turn on power play. Simon Duguay was sent to the penalty box for hooking. Despite being a man down, the Isles were able to keep the puck out of their net, killing the penalty.
The Remparts would tie the game at even strength though. With traffic in front of Bickle, Simon Maltais ripped a shot far side and beat him.
At the end of the first, the Remparts were leading in shots 12-7, but the game was still knotted up at one goal apiece.
Still tied after back-and-forth second
Isaac Vos took a tripping penalty two minutes into the period, but the penalty kill once again was successful.
Momentum stuck with the Remparts though as five minutes into the frame, Québec took the lead. Alexandre Desmarais beat Bickle for his second goal of the season.
The Isles would soon after have a chance of their own on the power play, but couldn't convert.
Bickle had to stay sharp, stopping a cross-crease chance from the Remparts.
It signalled a momentum shift as Simon Hughes went to other way and beat Remparts netminder Vincent Filion to tie the game.
After two periods the game was tied at two goals apiece, but the Isles trailed in shots 24-18.
Remparts pull away in third
The Isles pressed to open the final stanza.
They were awarded a power play early in the frame, but once again they couldn't take advantage.
Eventually, Québec was awarded a power play and restored their lead. Zachary Marquis-Laflamme lasered it over Bickle's glove for his twelfth goal of the season.
Charlottetown started to push back. Kyle Powers had back to back shots but he couldn't beat Filion.
Then, against the flow of play, the Remparts added another.
Daniel Agostino scored on a breakaway to double Québec's lead to 4-2.
Right after, the Isles went back on the power play and Carter Bickle was called to the bench for the extra attacker.
Despite having multiple chances while they were playing 6-on-4, they couldn't break through Filion and the Remparts won their second game in just as many nights.
Head coach Jim Hulton thought the game could have gone either way.
"I thought it was a tight checking, hard fought battle tonight and we just came out on the wrong end of it. I didn't think we played a bad game," he said. "I thought they had the jump in the first 10 minutes but I liked our push."
The Isles hit the ice again on a one-game road trip Wednesday, Jan. 17th in Saint John to take on the Sea Dogs. Puck drop at TD Station is at 7 p.m.
