Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Charlottetown, PE - The Charlottetown Islanders fall in extra time to the Sherbrooke Phoenix 2-1 at the Eastlink Centre Saturday night.
Carter Bickle earned second star in the loss, stopping 31 of 33 shots in the loss.
Chippy but scoreless first period
Sherbrooke was on the rush early but Bickle looked sharp, stopping the initial chances.
Then, the Isles had their fair share of chances. Will Shields tested Phoenix goaltender Mathys Routhier first, followed by Michael Horth and Anton Topilnyckyj.
Shields took the only minor penalty given out in the frame as he was called for boarding.
Bickle stayed locked in while a man down. Alexis Michaud and James Swan even had a chance at a 2-on-0 short-handed, but Swan was just a hair offside.
Play got chippy at the end of the period and Kyle Powers ended up dropping the gloves for his first career fight after a scrum ensued after the final whistle of the period.
Sherbrooke led in shots 11-5 going into the first intermission.
1-1 after two, Allen gets his first of the year
After just five minutes of play, four-on-four was needed as Simon Duguay was sent to the box for roughing while Hugo Marcil was penalized for slashing.
Nothing came of the extra space on the ice though.
Just under half way into the middle frame, Sherbrooke opened the scoring. Charles-Antoine Beauregard tipped a shot from Jesse Carrière past Bickle to put the Phoenix up 1-0.
More four-on-four play would be needed as both Ross Campbell and Jean-Félix Lapointe were sent to the box for roughing, but once again the extra space meant nothing.
The Islanders started to gain momentum. Campbell had a chance before Will Allen drew a penalty to send the Isles to their first power play of the game.
It was Allen (1) who capitalized as well. A rebound from Isaac Vos' (16) shot popped right to him and he put it in the back of the net to tie the game. Carl-Ettienne Michel (6) also assisted.
"It feels great to get the first goal of the season, to get the monkey off the back," Allen said. "I planted by butt in front of the net and Vos had a good shot. I saw the rebound there and went for it."
Allen's goal would be all for the second period. Sherbrooke still led in shots 24-17.
Regulation not enough, overtime needed
The third and final stanza started with Bickle making crucial saves before Marcus Kearsey had a chance of his own but was turned aside.
Cole Huckins then drew a tripping penalty to give the Isles a chance to take the lead.
While a man up, Matthew Butler took a one-time shot from the face-off circle but was denied by Routhier.
The Isles couldn't convert in the end but the puck stayed in the Phoenix defensive end.
Swan and Horth each had chances near the end of regulation but they weren't able to get it by Routhier.
Bickle made another big save to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Owen Conrad went on a 2-on-1 but wasn't able to take the shot.
The puck went back the other way. Beauregard was sent on a breakaway and he beat Bickle on the shot. It rang off the post and into the back of the net to take the extra point away from the Isles, winning 2-1.
Sherbrooke led in shots 33-29.
Head coach Jim Hulton commented on the loss.
"I thought for the most part our effort was good, it was a tight-checking affair and I thought we stuck with it," he said.
He has a gameplan going into Bathurst tomorrow for their third game in just as many days.
"We'll have to trap things up, clog things up in the neutral zone. We're going to have to be opportunistic with our chances," he said.
Puck drop tomorrow at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre is at 3 p.m.
