The Hawaiian Islanders will open its third season of arenafootball2 on the road in Fresno, Calif. on March 27, but will bring plenty of action to its home opener, April 17th.

The 16-game schedule will have 12 games against West Division opponents and a home-and-home match up with the Louisville Fire and the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. The Bakersfield Blitz franchise of 2003 moved to Fresno, Calif. and became the Central Valley Coyotes. An expansion team (of the same name) will be located in Bakersfield in 2004. The San Diego Riptide rounds out the four-team West. Each West team will face each other four times (two home, two away).

In response to customer surveys, kickoff for home games is now 6:30 p.m. to accommodate families.

Head Coach Cal Lee is gearing up to kick off another thrilling season of Hawaiian Islanders Arena Football. Fans can get a sneak peek of the potential 2004 team at the open tryouts Sunday, Feb. 22 at the St. Louis School football field.

For Islanders team hopefuls, registration starts at 9:00 a.m. with a $25 fee (cash only). Candidates will be tested on the 40-yard dash (timed), the bench press (225 pounds) for repetition, the shuttle run and the 4-corner agility drill.

The tryout is open for all positions and will be conducted outdoors on FieldTurf. Players will be required to perform in a Pro-Style workout. All participants are required to bring their own shoes (outdoor cleats preferably) and other proper workout attire. This will be a non-contact tryout.

“We are looking for players who can compete at the professional level,” said Islanders Head Coach Cal Lee. “This is a legitimate opportunity for players to get noticed. We know there are talented athletes in Hawaii and we want the best players to compete at this level.”

The Hawaiian Islanders are constantly looking for talented local players to join the state’s only professional football franchise. Lee and the Islanders finished the 2003 season with an 11-7 record and the West Division Championship and advanced to the second round of the af2 playoffs losing to the eventual champion Tulsa Talons.

With the collegiate football season over, it’s time for af2 Head Coach Cal Lee to shift his focus to the Islanders—a team with high expectations and a Western Division title to defend.

In his first season in the pro ranks, Lee’s Islanders finished with an overall record of 11-7; a division title and a 57-30 playoff win over the Wichita Stealth.

This weekend, the Islanders will hold open tryouts for the upcoming season and Lee will have his first look at the 2004 team.

“Everyone is a little nervous and excited,” Lee says. “We have some new players coming in and we have some old players coming back. Right now it’s exciting just to get the team ready.”

Lee’s name is most synonymous with the Run & Shoot offense and a stifling defense, a system that has helped him to 18 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Championships, 14 Prep Bowl Championships, and the inaugural Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championship.

Many of his athletes have gone on to Division I college football programs and at one point, three St. Louis graduates could be seen as starting quarterbacks for their respective teams-- Timmy Chang (Hawaii), Jason Guesser (Washington State) and Darnell Arceneaux (Utah).

This season’s philosophy is no different from the last. The only difference is that the intensity level will be higher.
