Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The 2018 Christmas trading period opened up in the QMJHL on Sunday and the Charlottetown Islanders wasted little time making a splash early on.

The Isles announced Monday that they have acquired defenseman Noah Laaouan from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in exchange for forward Derek Gentile.

Laaouan is a 17 year-old defenseman from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He currently has 2 goals and 12 points in 34 games this season.

The 5'11 defender was originally selected in the first round, 14th overall, by the Screaming Eagles in the 2017 QMJHL Draft. Over 83 games in his career, Laaouan has four goals and 26 points.

"I'm really excited to be a part of the Islanders organization!" said Laaouan following the news of the deal. "I've heard many great things about the staff and organization. I'm really looking forward to getting to the island, meeting everyone involved and putting the islanders jersey on for the first time!"

Laaouan was a player the Islanders coveted dating back to his draft day, according to associate coach Guy Girouard.

"Noah still to this day remains one of our best pre-draft interviews for potential draft picks." said Girouard on the newest Islander. "We were impressed with him in his draft year, and we've been keeping an eye on him ever since."

Also serving as the team's assistant general manager, Girouard said the team feels Laaouan will be a key component of the roster for years to come.

"He's a right-shot defenseman who plays with a bit of an edge and has some offensive upside." added Girouard.

Gentile meanwhile is in the midst of his fourth season in the QMJHL. Through 33 games, the 5'8 forward has seven goals and 33 points. He was originally acquired by the Islanders at the Christmas trading period last season, in the deal that sent Matthew Grouchy and Gregor MacLeod to the Quebec Remparts.

A native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Gentile returns to his hometown team and is reunited with childhood friend, fellow Islander alumni Mitchell Balmas.

"Unfortunately you have to give up something to get something; Derek is a point-per-game player in this league and will likely be that in his overage year as well." added Girouard.
