Charlottetown Islanders News Release

Islanders General Manager Jim Hulton announced a trade on Tuesday morning with the Cape Breton Eagles.

The transaction includes the acquisition of the former 11th overall selection in the 2022 QMJHL Entry Draft, William Shields. In return, the Islanders will send forward Lucas Romeo and a 2026 3rd round pick to the Eagles.

Shields, a Falmouth, N.S. native, has suited up 99 regular season games and has tallied 33 career points (14 G, 19A) over his first year and a half in the QMJHL.

"We are very excited to welcome a player of William's caliber to our young roster", commented Hulton. "Before the 2022 draft, he was regarded as the top Nova Scotia-born player available. He has high skill, plays with grit, and fits perfectly into our age group that we are building around."

This season, Shields has been moved throughout the Eagles lineup through the first half of the season.

"We're excited to give Will a fresh start in Charlottetown", said Hulton. "We are excited about Will's potential and to see how he gels with our young core."

Romeo will depart the Islanders with 92 regular season games and 41 career points. He was signed as a free agent before the 2022-23 season.

Shields will make his Islanders debut when Charlottetown faces Saint John at 7 pm on Thursday, January 4th at TD Station. The Islanders return home on Friday, January 5th at the Eastlink Centre. Tickets can be purchased here, in person, or by phone at 902-629-6625.
