Ironmen Fall to Miners

June 3, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Lorain County Ironmen News Release

The end of the weekend couldn't come quickly enough. After scoring a run in the top of the first inning of Saturday night's contest, the Ironmen failed to plate a run over the next 17 innings. Six West Virginia pitchers combined to throw a shutout as the Miners remain undefeated at home.

Adam Beach took the mound for Lorain County and allowed the first three runners to reach on a double, walk and single. Designated hitter Kolin McMillen grounded into a double play, but the clean-up hitter knocked a run home in doing so and West Virginia led 5-0 after one inning.

The Ironmen led off the second inning with consecutive singles and looked ready to respond, but they struck out twice and flew out to end the frame. The black and grey struck 14 times on the night.

Bradley Strong led off the third inning with his second double to left field in as many at bats. Luke Meeteer attempted to bunt the runner over, but Beach fired the ball to third instead trying to throw out Strong. Unfortunately, Strong's head first dive just beat the tag, leaving runners on the corners with nobody out.

Shortstop Matt Chavarria placed a sacrifice bunt up the first base line, driving home the third run of the game for the Miners.

West Virginia tacked on two more in the fourth with a single, double and sacrifice fly. The Miners led Lorain County5-0 through four innings, who stranded four runners over the first four innings.

Beach and reliever Dan Poskocil kept Lorain County in the game through the fifth and sixth inning as they faced only one hitter over the limit. Nate Antone led off the top of the sixth inning with a double that short-hopped the wall in right field and he soon-after advanced to third on a passed ball. But, Antone was stranded at third with two punch outs and a pop out to second base.

The Ironmen went hitless for the remainder of the game.

Trailing 6-0 in the top of the eighth, Nolan Neuschaefer and Cody Koch were both hit by pitches to start the inning. But again, the offense struggled to drive anyone home and the Miners held strong with their lead.

The Miners scored three additional runs in the ninth inning to seal the win and improve to 5-1 on the season.

Lorain County struck out twice in an inning on six different occasions. They were punched out 23 times in two games this weekend.

The Ironmen have a scheduled off-day tomorrow before returning to the road for games on Tuesday and Wednesday in Chillicothe.
