Tavares Busts out as Bombers Finish Perfect Opening Week

Dubois County Bombers News Release

Dubois County Bombers catcher Chris Tavares hit a three-run double in the sixth inning to put the Bombers up 6-4 in a game against the Terre Haute Rex they would eventually win 7-4 Sunday evening at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.

Tavares finished with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. First baseman Jeff Zahn and center fielder Austin Nyman also had RBI singles to pace the Bombers offense.

The Bombers struck for a two-out run in the bottom of the first as Zahn continued his hot streak and added two more in the third with the aid of two Rex errors.

Bombers starter David Jesch overcame some erratic control (five walks and one hit-by-pitch) as he threw five scoreless innings and was pulled after putting the first two Rex batters aboard in the sixth.

Joey McClung, who reported to the Bombers earlier Sunday afternoon, came on and allowed Jesch's two runners to score and then two of his own, although two Bombers errors gave the Rex extra outs that they capitalized on.

McClung, however, became the pitcher of record, earning the win as he pitched the seventh and started the eighth before giving way to fellow left-hander Nick Green. Green was able to strand both of McClung's runners and work the final six outs for the save.

Rex pitcher Tommy Strunc took the loss for the Rex. Each team cranked out 11 hits and committed three errors.

Dubois County is now 6-0 and has a day off tomorrow. The Bombers head to Danville to take on the Dans Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
