Dubois County Bombers News Release
Scoring all eight of their runs in three innings Saturday night, the Dubois County Bombers improved to 5-0 with an 8-6 win over the Terre Haute Rex at Bob Warn Field in Sycamore Stadium in Terre Haute, Ind. The Bombers finish a three-game road trip with a spotless record.
"It's not easy to win on the road," Bombers field manager Ryan Anderson said. "To go 3-0 [on the road trip] is big for this club.
The Bombers scored three runs in the first, three in the seventh and two in the eighth. After designated hitter Dalton Rouleaux and catcher Chris Tavares walked, Jeff Zahn, playing in right field tonight, stepped to the plate with two outs and flared a 2-2 pitch down the left field line off Rex left-hander Kyle Zimmerman for an RBI double.
Zahn's had an interesting season thus far. Over the past few games, he has gradually moved up in the lineup, hitting fifth Saturday night. He's also bounced around in the field. He started the season in left field and played most recently at first base; Zahn is a first baseman by trade but has played in the outfield due to personnel needs for the team.
Shortstop Frank Rawdow batted next for the Bombers and, with Tavares on third and Zahn on second, lashed a line drive to left field that Rex left fielder Zack Willoughby allowed to skip past him; both runners scored, and the Bombers had an early lead.
Ryan Billo, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Evansville, earned the win after pitching seven innings and surrendering six earned runs. He allowed the 3-0 first inning lead to evaporate quickly, allowing the first two Rex to reach base with singles and the next two via the walk.
Rex center fielder Kyle Kempf and pitcher Zimmerman - batting sixth in the Rex lineup - would each drive in a run with productive outs before Billo retied Willoughby for the final out.
The Rex took a 4-3 lead in the next inning, and that score held as both pitchers settled into a groove.
That changed in the seventh when Rex first baseman Michael Schroeder flipped positions with Zimmerman and took the mound. After Bombers second baseman Bo Ausmus and Rouleaux reached via a hit-by-pitch and an infield single, respectively, Tavares singled, Zahn singled, and Rawdow each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and it was suddenly 6-4 Bombers.
Dubois County tacked on two more runs in the top of the eight that would prove crucial. In the bottom of the inning, Billo, after shutting out the Rex over the past five innings, walked the first two batters and was replaced by Spencer Sapp.
Sapp maneuvered through trouble and allowed the two inherited runners to score but found a way to get the final six outs.
In a season where the pitching has really shone through, it was clutch hitting Saturday evening that defined the game.
"We tried to make things happen early [offensively], and it didn't work out," Anderson said. "We made it happen when it counted, and I think that says a lot about this team."
The Bombers close out their first week of the 2012 season with a home date Sunday night against Terre Haute at 6:15 p.m. at League Stadium in Huntingburg.
