Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

September 5, 2005 - The IronBirds (25-47) dropped their 5th straight game on a festive night that recalled some baseball history at Ripken Stadium. In a pre-game ceremony, Cal Ripken, Jr. was joined by his family and former Orioles teammate and Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Murray to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Cal tying and breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record.

Once the festivities ended and the game started, Aberdeen and Brooklyn were locked in a pitcher's duel through 4 scoreless innings. Brooklyn went ahead 3-0 in the top of the 5th, but Aberdeen answered with a lone run of their own in the bottom half when Jose Zapata scored.

The ‘Birds cut the deficit in half when Zapata homered to lead off the 7th inning, the closet Aberdeen would get on the night. Brooklyn added some insurance with three runs in the 8th and another in the 9th.

Mark Fleisher and Brandon Snyder collected two hits, with Zapata, Jason Maxey and Corey Shafer picking up the other safeties.

The IronBirds conclude their 2005 home schedule on Tuesday night against Brooklyn with Fan Appreciation Night starting at 7:05.
