Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The Aberdeen IronBirds, Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles in the New York Penn League, are set to open their 2004 season at Ripken Stadium on Friday, June 18th at 7:35 against the Staten Island Yankees.

A growing tradition, the IronBirds use the Opening Day ceremonies to honor those who have made an impact on the State of Maryland. This year, former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell will throw out the first pitch to Bill Ripken. The ceremony will pay tribute to Modell for his many contributions to football in Maryland and the NFL.

The ceremonies will begin at 7:05pm. Immediately following the National Anthem four A-10 planes from the Warfield Air National Guard will conduct a military fly-over out of Martin State Airport in Essex, MD. Fifteen year-old Havre de Grace native Lauren Hurst will sing the National Anthem.

The 2004 season is completely sold out, marking the team's third consecutive sellout season. The IronBirds are one of two teams in recent minor league history to sellout every game in their first three years of existence. In addition, the front office has been working hard during the off-season to provide more exciting amenities to those visiting Ripken Stadium.

Orioles Hall-of-Famer Don Burford will manage the 2004 team, which is full of many young prospects. With the team roster still being finalized, practices are scheduled to begin early next week.

The IronBirds will face The Staten Island Yankees in their first series. Pitching great Tommy John will be making his first appearance as the Yankees 2004 manager. John won 288 games in the major leagues over 26 seasons.
