Iowa Stars bolster blueline

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White today announced that the Des Moines-based American Hockey League (AHL) team has signed defenseman Marty Wilford to a one-year AHL contract. Per club policy, terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

At 6-1, 215 pounds, Wilford becomes the first player signed by the Iowa Stars for the 2006-2007 season. The 29-year old blueliner is a nine-season professional, skating in 678 games, while posting 53 goals and 259 assists: 678(53/259/312). The Cobourg, Ontario native played in 79 games with the Manchester (NH) Monarchs during the 2005-06 season, notching five goals and 36 assists: 79(5/36/41). Since the 2000-01 season, Wilford has appeared in no-less than 77 games in a season and has laced-up the skates in 474 of a possible 480 AHL games.

"Marty will bring a solid veteran presence to the Iowa Stars, drawing from his experiences to help our young core of defensemen", commented Scott White.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Wilford has accumulated 760 total penalty minutes in his 678 professional games. Wilford's wife, Shelly, is an Iowa native.
