Iowa Cubs News Release

LAS VEGAS (Aug. 16, 2015) - Iowa broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth when John Andreoli scored on a game-winning squeeze bunt from Matt Szczur to lead the Cubs (67-54) past the Las Vegas 51s (66-56) 4-3 in Pacific Coast League action Sunday evening at Cashman Field in Las Vegas.

Iowa drew first blood in the top of the second when Chris Valaika drove in Arismendy Alcantara on an RBI double. The I-Cubs added two more in the third on a sacrifice fly from Christian Villanueva and an RBI single from Taylor Teagarden to give Iowa a 3-0 lead.

Las Vegas chipped away with a run in the fifth on a Dilson Herrera RBI double of Iowa starter Tsuyoshi Wada. The left-hander allowed just one run on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a no-decision.

Iowa carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before lefty Zac Rosscup ran into trouble. The southpaw surrendered a leadoff double to Danny Muno, who then scored two batters later on another RBI hit from Herrera. Rosscup was then lifted in favor of right-hander Blake Cooper, who allowed Herrera to score on an RBI single from Eric Campbell to knot the game 3-3.

Cooper (6-3) was able to escape further damage in the seventh and tossed a scoreless eighth inning to set up Iowa's action in the ninth. Right-hander Brian Schlitter spun a perfect ninth inning to earn his 19th save.

Lefty Darin Gorski started the game for Las Vegas and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Righty Vic Black (1-3) allowed Iowa's ninth-inning run to suffer the loss.

Teagarden led Iowa offensively with a 3-for-3 night to go along with an RBI and a walk. Andreoli and Javy Baez each had two-hit nights.

Herrera paced Las Vegas with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Dan Rohlfing and Muno each added a pair of hits.

The victory helped the I-Cubs keep pace in the American Northern Division. Both first-place Oklahoma City and third-place Omaha won Sunday afternoon. Iowa now trails the Dodgers by 6.0 games with 23 games to play.

The I-Cubs and 51s will play game three of their four-game set Monday evening. First pitch is set for 9:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Dallas Beeler (5-5, 5.16) will start for Iowa against 51s right-hander Tim Stauffer (2-0, 2.53). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 8:40 p.m. CT.
