Sardinas And Wang Named Weekâ??s Best Players
Published on August 17, 2015 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Luis Sardinas of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Chien-Ming Wang of the Tacoma Rainiers were named the Pacific Coast League's Player and Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 10-16, the league office announced today.
Luis Sardinas scored a league-high ten runs, while also compiling the most hits in the PCL this week with 12. The second baseman also owned the most total bases (17) in the league, helped by two doubles and one home run. He logged a .444 batting average for the week and was successful in all three of his stolen base attempts. Sardinas led the Sky Sox to a series opening win Tuesday at Round Rock with three hits, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning to put Colorado Springs ahead 6-5. The home run was the first he has hit this season. The switch-hitter collected four hits during a Thursday doubleheader, and followed up that performance with a four-hit game Friday in an extra-inning victory. He is batting .270 this season with the Sky Sox and his 13 stolen bases are tied for the team-lead.
Sardinas, 22, is in his first season with the Milwaukee Brewers' organization, having been acquired in a four-player trade from the Texas Rangers on Jan. 19. The Rangers signed him as an international free agent in 2009 out of Upata, Venezuela, before making his major league debut with Texas on April 20, 2014. He has played in 20 games for the Brewers this season, compiling 15 hits and seven runs. The Player of the Week honor is the second of his career, with the other coming in 2013, while playing for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Carolina League.
Chien-Ming Wang went the distance Saturday at Oklahoma City, pitching a complete-game shutout during Tacoma's 2-0 win over the Dodgers. The right-hander recorded 19 groundouts, two fly outs, and two strikeouts during his 112-pitch outing. Wang also held OKC to three hits, all singles, walked four batters, and allowed only five baserunners to reach scoring position. He retired eight-straight batters between the second and fifth innings, including a six-batter stretch when all outs were recorded by the shortstop. The nine inning complete-game shutout was Wang's first since he achieved the feat with the New York Yankees on July 28, 2006, against Tampa Bay. Wang's record with Tacoma now stands at 2-3 and his ERA sits at 5.14.
The 35-year-old from Tainan City, Taiwan, signed a minor-league deal with the Seattle Mariners on July 11, after beginning the year pitching in the Atlanta Braves' organization. The 2015 season is the 14th of his professional career, having been originally signed by the Yankees in 2000. He has appeared in 126 major league games, most recently in 2013 with the Toronto Blue Jays. This is the first Pitcher of the Week he has received since winning the award as a member of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League in June 2013. Wang joins Las Vegas' Hong-Chih Kuo (August 2006) as the only Taiwanese players to ever win a weekly honor from the PCL.
