Iowa Can'T Hang on to Early Lead

May 16, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

LAS VEGAS, NV - Chesny Young went 4-for-5 but it wasn't enough to boost the Iowa Cubs (15-21) to a victory over the Las Vegas 51s (16-22), Monday at Cashman Field. The I-Cubs out-hit the 51s 12-10, but helped their opponent to a 10-5 win with an error and eight walks.

Iowa had the control early, plating four runs in the opening frame. Young, Mark Zagunis, Victor Caratini and Taylor Davis each nabbed RBI as the I-Cubs collected five hits in the inning.

The I-Cubs got into trouble in the 51s first at-bat as Rob Zastryzny recorded just one out before exiting due to injury and leaving the bases loaded. Juan Paniagua took over, allowing two of three inherited runners to score.

Iowa held the lead, but Las Vegas crept up with a pair of runs in the third and eventually tied the game on a solo home run from Dominic Smith in the fourth inning. Two innings later, Amed Rosario put the 51s in control with a three-run homer off David Rollins. The I-Cubs showed life in the late innings, but Travis Taijeron belted another home run for the 51s in the eighth to solidify the advantage.

John Andreoli extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-4 night and two doubles. Zagunis went 2-for-5 with a double of his own.

Iowa and Las Vegas continue the series at 9:05 p.m. CT tomorrow at Cashman Field. Listen on AM 940, stream the broadcast live on www.iowacubs.com or watch with MiLB.TV.
