GAME PREVIEW: Iowa Barnstormers @ Arizona Rattlers

Iowa travels to Arizona February 26

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers (0-1) remain on the road as they take on the Arizona Rattlers (0-1) on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. CST at the Talking Stick Resort Arena. Fans can stream the game live on YouTube.

The Barnstormers will look for its first win of the season as they travel to face the Rattlers on February 26. The Rattlers will also be looking for its first win of the season after losing to the Sioux Falls Storm last Friday.

The Barnstormers lost a back and forth game to start its third season in the Indoor Football League (IFL) losing to the Wichita Falls Nighthawks 68-53 last Saturday. Quarterback Travis Partridge threw for six touchdowns and also ran in a short score. Wide Receiver Brady Roland was on the receiving end on three of those touchdowns, while Linebacker Javicz Jones had a team high 10 total tackles for the Iowa defense.

The Arizona Rattlers fell to the Sioux Falls Storm in its IFL debut last Friday. Arizona was held scoreless during the first quarter, but Rattlers' Darrell Monroe opened things up with a touchdown run early in the second quarter. Both teams traded scores throughout the second half, but the Rattlers' defense could not hold up as Sioux Falls continued to pound the ball and used two fourth quarter touchdowns to take the lead. Arizona's offense was led by receiver Anthony Amos who caught two touchdowns in the game.

The Barnstormers will return to Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday, March 26, 2017 for the home opener against the Cedar Rapids Titans. Before joining the Barnstormers organization, Wooten had a successful season as Offensive Coordinator for the Cedar Rapids Titans.

Wooten began his career in indoor football as a quarterback playing for teams such as the River City Raiders (PIFL), Wichita Wild (IFL), and the Nebraska Dan- ger (IFL). Wooten earned his first position as Head Coach in 2012 for the Allen Wranglers (IFL). Wooten also spent time as Head Coach for the now defunct Bemidji Axe- men in 2015.

Marcus Coleman Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach Coleman joins the Iowa Barnstormers staff as the Defensive Coordinator and the team's defensive backs coach. Coleman is a former NFL defensive back, during his 10 year career he spent time with the New York Jets, Houston Tex- ans, and Dallas Cowboys. In 2010, Coleman was honored by his alma mater as he was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2016, Coleman joined the Indoor Football League (IFL) as the defensive backs coach for the now defunct Tri-Cities Fever.

Custer has over 20 years of experience in coaching, having coached in college, arena football, and indoor football. Custer was part of the Cedar Rapids Titans coaching team for four seasons, winning over 40 games and seeing the conference championship game all four years.

Malcolm Nelson Defensive Line Coach/ Special Teams Coordinator Nelson joins the Iowa Barnstormers staff as the Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Nelson has over 15 years of combined coaching experience in high school, college, and indoor football. While coaching at Livingstone College, Nelson earned the opportunity to coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011 as part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship. With the Steelers, Nelson was able to gain experience as a special teams coach.

He completed his Athletic Training degree at the Univer- sity of Iowa before beginning work with the Iowa State Football team. He spent two years with the Cyclones while completing a Master's degree in Education. Following graduate school, he started a private sports medicine business in An- keny, called The Athletic Training Room. He provides sports medicine services to athletes in the clinic and outreach services to Iowa high schools, youth sports associations, and other athletic events.

Michael Buchanan Week #2 Iowa Barnstormers (0-1) @ Arizona Rattlers (0-1) Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 4:00 pm CST Talking Stick Resort Arena- Phoenix, AZ Michael returns to the Barnstormers staff as the equipment manager for the 2017 season. This will be his 6th season apart of the organization after serving as Assistant Equipment Manager from 2011-2014 and spent time as the Head Equipment Manager for a part of 2015. Buchanan returns home after spending last season in the Arena Football League with the Cleveland Gladiators where he served as the Head Equipment Manager and spending some time in the American Hockey League with the Iowa Wild during their 2015-2016 season. Michael currently resides in Altoona and enjoys spending time with family as well as cheering on the Cyclones.

College: Balentine played for three years at the University of Southern Mis- sissippi. During his time with the Golden Eagles, Balentine collected 65 career receptions for 883 yards and 8 touchdowns.

College: Purdy attended Texas Southern University, collecting 34 tackles, four pass breakups, and an interception during his senior year in 2012.

College: Collegiately, Milton played at Florida Tech where he recorded 73 recep- tions for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns in 11 games during his senior season. While at Florida Tech, Milton received numerous honors including D2 All-American Honorable Mention, Gulf South Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and USA College First Team All American. Brady Roland #11 6'2" / 185 lbs. / WR Grand View IFL Experience: 3 Years Indoor Football League: Roland (6-0, 185, Grand View) returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for his third season with the team and in the Indoor Football League (IFL). Roland joined the Barnstormers roster in 2015 following his col- legiate career. Last year, Roland started in all 16 games finishing the season with 95 receptions for 1,086 yards and 22 touchdowns. At the conclusion of the 2016 season, Roland earned league honors being named to the First Team All-IFL. This is the second recognition Roland has received from the IFL, being named to Second Team All-IFL in 2015.

College: Roland played 4 years at Grand View University where he started in 47 games earning 214 receptions for 3,549 yards and 32 career touchdowns.

In his 15 games, Hefty scored nine receiving touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns.

College: Hefty played at Upper Iowa University where he was a four-year letter winner. During his four years at Upper Iowa, Hefty caught 176 passes for 2,213 yards and 23 touchdowns. In his senior season, Hefty won All-NSIC South Division First Team.

Following his collegiate career, Mays was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles as a rookie free agent in 2014. In 2015, Mays spent time with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League (AFL). College: Mays spent two years with Central Lakes Community College before transferring to Florida A&M. While at Florida A&M, Mays ap- peared in a total of 21 games where he collected 68 tackles, 15.5 tack- les for loss, and six sacks.

Kenton Chun #19 5'6"/ 165 lbs. / K Hawaii IFL Experience: 1 year Indoor Football League: Chun (5-6, 165, Hawaii) joins the Iowa Barn- stormers for his rookie season in the IFL.

College: Chun began his career at the Southern Oregon University before trans- ferring to the University of Hawaii. Chun spent the 2011 season with the Rain- bow Warriors starting in 11 games.

In 14 games, Gold- smith collected 51.5 total tackles, 7 pass breakups, and 4 interceptions return- ing one for a touchdown.

Professional: Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Goldsmith signed a free- agent contract with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he ultimately spent the season.

He finished his collegiate career earning All-USCAA First Team honors and All-ECAC North First Team honors. Williams was signed to the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie in May of 2015.

College: Williams began his career at Louisburg College where he received BJCAA All-American Honors before transferring to Alfred State College. In his senior season, Williams rushed for 1,676 yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games with the Pioneers. Prior to attend- ing Sam Houston State, Williams spent time at ASA College where he earned NJCAA All-America honorable mention and All-Northeast Conference running back as a sophomore.

Javicz Jones #23 6'1" / 230 / LB Mary Hardin Baylor IFL Experience: Veteran Indoor Football League: Jones returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for his third season with the team. Jones first joined the Barnstormers roster in 2015 where he saw action in all 14 games finishing the season with 97.5 total tackles. Jones' efforts earned him league honors naming him to the 2015 First Team All-IFL.

Professional: In 2016, Jones closed out the Barnstormers season having ap- peared in 7 games and collected 62.5 total tackles after a brief stint with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

College: Allen spent four years at Wake Forest University appearing in 24 games. Allen made his first career start in 2012 where he collected five tackles, including four solo stops. Allen closed out the season ranked fourth on the team with six special teams tackles.

Bender began his IFL career in 2015 with the Green Bay Blizzard. In 13 games, Bender collected 65 solo tackles, 18 assists, 8 interceptions, and 2 fumble recoveries earning him Team MVP and league honors as First Team All-IFL. At the conclusion of the 2015 season, Bender's hard work earned him a second workout with the Green Bay Packers. In 2016, Bender appeared in 6 games with the Blizzard collecting 28 solo tackles, 9 assists, 2 interceptions, and 2 touchdowns before being traded to the Nebraska Danger where he finished out the season.

College: Bender attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for two years. During his two seasons with the Blazers, Bender started in all 24 games and racked up 213 total tackles ranking 16th on UAB's career tackles list.

College: Butler attended the University of Louisville, where he played for four years as a Cardinal appearing in 39 total games. Ra'Shawde Myers #45 6'4" / 265 lbs. / DL Marshall IFL Experience: 2 years Indoor Football League: Myers returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for his second season with the team. Myers first joined the Barnstormers roster dur- ing the 2016 season, appearing in 6 games where he collected 17 total tack- les.

College: Myers attended Marshall University racking up 118 total tackles and 7.5 sacks over four seasons.

Bell was waived by the Raiders in the final cut down, but earned a spot on the practice squad where he ultimately finished out the season.

College: Bell began his career at Navarro Junior College before transferring to Louisiana Tech where he played for two years. In 2013, Bell appeared in 11 of 12 games as a Bulldog, earning the start in eight. Bell was named 2013 Honor- able Mention All-Conference USA.

Schonbrunner first joined the Iowa Barnstorm- ers as members of the Arena Football League (AFL) in 2014. During his time in Des Moines, Schonbrunner made an impact on the community, earning the AFL Pulse Player of the Week award for his philanthropic efforts. In 2015, Schon- brunner signed with the Tampa Bay Storm where he started in 13 games at Center.

College: Schonbrunner attended Temple University appearing in 38 games between 2008 and 2011.

College: McCray played two years at the University of Memphis after spending time at Eastern Illinois University and Coffeyville Community College. McCray tran- sitioned to offensive line after closing out his first season as a Memphis Tiger with six tackles, five of which were solo stops.
