Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Kannapolis, NC - In the first game of the three-game series down in Augusta, Georgia, Kannapolis scored three runs in the sixth inning and added on an insurance run in the eighth to defeat the GreenJackets 4-2 Monday night at SRP Park.
After a Johan Cruz walk and a double off the bat of Justin Yurchak to score Cruz for the game's first run, Evan Skoug cranked his first home run of the season to left-center, giving Kannapolis starter, Kade McClure, a comfortable 3-0 lead.
McClure (W, 1-0) looked solid from the start for the Intimidators, inducing a steady diet of groundballs through 6.1 innings on the bump, while also sprinkling in six strikeouts, while giving up five hits.
After the three-run sixth inning for Kannapolis to align McClure for the win, the GreenJackets tried their best to get on board in the home-half of the seventh inning with a leadoff single from Jacob Gonzalez. After a line-out off the bat of Manuel Geraldo for the first out of the seventh, Rob Calabrese homered for his first long ball of the season, cutting the Kannapolis lead to one, 3-2.
RHP Jake Elliott came in to help preserve the lead for McClure, getting Malique Ziegler to line in to a double play that came back to the 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher, as he snagged then snapped the ball to Yurchak at first to end the threat.
Up by one in the ninth, Laz Rivera connected on his first long ball of the season with a solo-shot to left-center field off Olbis Parra, giving the I's and Tyler Johnson a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Johnson worked around a leadoff walk to earn his third save of the season, picking up one strikeout along the way.
Kannapolis will look to win their third series of the season in game two of the three-game series against the GreenJackets Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at SRP Park.
