Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Intimidators bounced back from a tough road trip, rallying for a 4-1 victory over Lakewood at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Thursday night.
Harold Garcia's eighth-inning error opened the floodgates, as Kannapolis scored three runs to break a 1-1 deadlock. Garcia could not handle a throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt from Drew Garcia, allowing Eduardo Escobar to score the winning run from second base.
Sergio Morales added an RBI groundout, before Jose Vargas doubled in a run with his first hit of the season off of Ryan Bergh (2-2).
The late rally was only possible because of a dominating pitching performance by four Kannapolis pitchers. Stephen Sauer, making just his second professional start, pitched a career-high five innings and struck out a career-best eight. He allowed one run and did not walk a batter.
Drew O'Neil pitched a scoreless frame before Nate Jones (2-0) took over and faced the minimum six batters over his two innings.
Dan Remenowsky got the save, his fourth, by striking out the side in the ninth. Kannapolis combined to strike out 17 Lakewood hitters.
Lakewood (18-14) posted the first run of the game on a RBI single from Jeremy Hamilton in the second inning. It was just the second time all season the Intimidators (17-16) won a game despite giving up the first run of the contest.
Jason Knapp pitched five innings in the start for the BlueClaws. He moved into the top spot on the South Atlantic League strikeout leader board with nine K's in the ballgame. He has now fanned 52 batters this season.
