Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greenville, SC - Greenville's Anthony Rizzo battled cancer last season and this year, the Drive first baseman is showing how happy he is to be battling the South Atlantic League instead. Rizzo hit two home runs in the Drive's 11-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at Fluor Field on Thursday night. Greenville took three of four from the Jackets after Augusta won Monday's series opener.
Rizzo's two-out solo home run in the first off Mike Loree gave Greenville the early lead. The Drive added a second run on a fielder's choice play in the fourth with David Mailman scoring on a ball hit to third. Matt Klimas was unable to handle Charlie Culberson's throw, allowing Mailman to score the game's second run.
The wheels fell off the wagon for the GreenJackets in the fifth inning. Oscar Tejeda doubled with the bases loaded off Loree to score two and double the lead for the Drive. Greenville scored two more off relief pitcher Eric Stolp when Michael Almanzar singled with the bases loaded once again. The Drive put the game away with four more in the seventh, including Rizzo's second homer, a Kade Keowen RBI fielder's choice and a Pete Hissey RBI hit. Mailman singled in another in the eighth.
Mike Loberg provided a late highlight for Augusta, drilling a two-run home run over the right-centerfield fence in the ninth inning, his first of the season. The home run was just the eighth hit all year by the GreenJackets.
Loree (1-4) took the loss for Augusta, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout. Casey Kelly was marvelous for the Drive, picking up his fifth win of the season. Kelly (5-0) threw six innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball, fanning three without walking a batter.
The GreenJackets make their first of two trips to Asheville on Friday to begin a four-game series with the Tourists. Eric Surkamp (1-1, 5.33) will get the nod for the GreenJackets, facing Robinson Fabian. First pitch from McCormick Field is 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Wednesday May 20th to face the Drive for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
