Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Kannapolis Intimidators earned a series split with the Delmarva Shorebirds as they played well, belted out 14 hits and got a strong start from Andre Rienzo in an 8-5 win on Thursday night in Salisbury, MD.

In his final start of the season, Rienzo (8-4) capped off his breakout season with six strong innings where he allowed just one run and five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Rienzo had won each of his last eight decisions and finished the season with 11 straight starts where he allowed less than three runs in each.

The Intimidators (33-33) hit for three runs in the first inning off starter Nick Haughian as the first three batters all got hits. Ryan Lee led off with a single, followed by an RBI-double by Jake Oester and a single by Tyler Saladino that scored Oester on an error. Saladino would then score on an infield single and an error off the bat of Jose Vargas to take a 3-0 first inning lead.

The Intimidators added to their advantage in the second as Juan Silverio reached on an error and later scored on an RBI-single from Lee and it was 4-0 after two.

Haughian (6-4) would settle down to throw scoreless innings in the third and fourth but allowed a run in the fifth as he loaded the bases and walked Kevin Dubler as his final hitter. Haughian went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs, four earned. At that point it was 5-1 Intimidators.

As Rienzo exited the game, the Intimidators summoned Matt Heidenreich for the first time this season, but the Shorebirds (27-39) attempted a comeback. The Shorebirds had two extra base hits in the inning and scored two runs to cut the lead to 5-3.

However, a run for the Intimidators in the eighth on a sacrifice fly made it a 6-3 game and two more in the ninth on a Dubler RBI-single after a long at-bat made it 8-3 before the bottom of the ninth. Despite two runs off Orlando Santos, the Intimidators still held on to win 8-5 and split the series and get back to .500.

The Intimidators will leave Salisbury and go up the eastern coast to Lakewood, NJ to take on the BlueClaws. Weather permitting, the Intimidators will send Ryan Buch to the mound to pitch in the state of NJ for the first time since he went to Monmouth University and he will be opposed by Jonathan Pettibone at 7:05 pm.
