Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

The Savannah Sand Gnats blasted the Greensboro Grasshoppers for the second straight night, bombing their way to a 12-2 win Thursday night following an 11-0 win on Wednesday.

The Gnats (30-35/72-63), who have won three in a row, scored 44 runs in the four game series in Greensboro.

Savannah scored two runs in the second inning, four in each of the third and fourth innings to turn the game into a blowout and added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings.

The Grasshoppers (33-33/65-71) didn't score until the bottom of the ninth.

The Gnats offense made life easy for starter Armando Rodriguez who was dominant again over five innings in improving to 8-9.

He struck out six, walked one and gave up just two singles.

In his last five starts, Rodriguez is 2-2 with a 0.93 ERA (3 ER/29 IP) and 45 strikeouts against five walks.

C Juan Torres was 5-5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Savannah offense.

He became the second Gnat in the series, and the second Gnat all year, to hit homers in consecutive games.

Torres becomes the fourth Savannah hitter with five hits in a game this year.

Torres was one of three Gnats with homers joined by 18-year old 3B Aderlin Rodriguez who's three-run homer in the fourth put Savannah ahead 9-0.

It was the first SAL long ball for Rodriguez who hit 13 for Kingsport in the Appalachian League.

2B Jet Butler homered in the ninth as part of a 2-5 night to finish the Gnats' scoring.

The Gnats send RHP Gonzalez Germen (1-0, 1.29) to the mound to start the team's final home series of the regular season against the Asheville Tourists and LHP Jonathan Vargas (4-9, 6.67) Friday at 7:05 pm.

Gates open at 6 pm and the pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50.
