Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lakewood, NJ - With three runs in the sixth inning, the Lakewood BlueClaws took a three-run lead they didn't lose in a 4-1 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night. The BlueClaws took three of four from Augusta in their second-to-last series of the season.
With the game tied at one, the BlueClaws had two on with one out when Michael Dabbs doubled to left-center to score both runners and put the Claws ahead by a pair. Later in the inning, an error by shortstop Ydwin Villegas allowed a third runner to score as Lakewood's lead grew to 4-1.
That would be enough for Josh Zeid, the second BlueClaws pitcher of the night after spot starter Eric Massingham struck out seven in five scoreless innings. Zeid (8-4) threw three innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. Kyle Wertz retired three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth to get his third save of the year.
Lakewood took the first lead when Leandro Castro greeted Chris Heston with a long home run to right-center to open the second and put the Claws up 1-0. Heston got some luck after that, as leadoff singles in each the third and fourth innings were wiped off by double plays.
Augusta tied things in the sixth at 1-1. Nick Liles singled to open the inning - part of his three-hit game - and scored on Alex Berg's RBI double to left-center. The throw from left-center went past the catcher and Berg tried to take third on the overthrow, but was thrown out at third by pitcher Josh Zeid who was backing up the play. Augusta got two hits after the sixth but could do nothing with them.
Heston (5-13) went the distance for the GreenJackets, firing eight innings and allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Zack Wheeler (2-3, 3.86) takes the mound for the GreenJackets on Friday as they open their final series of the 2010 regular season against the Delmarva Shorebirds. First pitch from Salisbury, MD will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
